''The Career of Katherine Bush'' is a lost 1919 American silent drama film produced by Famous Players-Lasky and distributed by Paramount Pictures. Roy William Neill directed and Catherine Calvert starred. The film is based on a 1916 Elinor Glyn novel. Plot As described in a film magazine, Katherine Bush (Calvert), a young woman from London's lower middle class, yearns for the finer things in life and spends an illicit weekend with a certain Lord Algy (Goldsworthy) at a fashionable watering place. Returning home, she answers an advertisement that leads to a position as secretary to Lady Garrubardine (Brundage), a leader of London society. Lord Gerald Strobridge (Kent), Lady Garrubardine's unhappily married nephew, falls in love with Katherine but she only offers him friendship. Katherine rises in Lady Garrubardine's estimation until she is almost an equal in the household. Roy William Neill
Roy William Neill (4 September 1887 – 14 December 1946) was an Irish-born American film director best known for directing the last eleven of the fourteen Sherlock Holmes films starring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce, made between 1943 and 1946 and released by Universal Studios. Biography With his father as the captain, Roy William Neill was born on a ship off the coast of Ireland. His birth name was Roland de Gostrie. Neill began directing silent films in 1917 and went on to helm 111 films, 55 of them silent. Although most of Neill's films were low-budget B-movies, he was known for directing films with meticulously lit scenes with carefully layered shadows that would become the style of ''film noir'' in the late 1940s. Claire Whitney
Claire Whitney (May 6, 1890 – August 27, 1969) was an American stage and film actress who appeared in 111 films between 1912 and 1949. Only 21 of these films survive, as most have been lost. Whitney gained early acting experience with a stock theater company in Massachusetts, following which she toured the United States in a vaudeville production of ''Little Mother''. Whitney made her first film in 1913 for Solax and continued making films until 1921, mainly for Fox Film Corporation. Whitney came back to films in 1926 with a role in ''The Great Gatsby'' which would be her final silent film. She continued working in film between 1931 and 1949 when she retired.
