The Cancer Council Australia
Cancer Council Australia is a national, nonprofit organisation which aims to promote cancer-control policies and to reduce the illness caused by cancer in Australia. It advises various groups, including the government, on cancer-related issues, acts as an advocate for cancer patients and their friends, and is a major funding contributor towards health research, prevention and education. Background Cancer Council Australia formed in 1961 as the Australian Cancer Society. It was renamed Cancer Council Australia in 1997 and appointed Alan Coates its inaugural CEO. Alan Coates
Alan Stuart Coates (born 27 June 1943) is an Australian professor of clinical oncology, medical researcher and administrator. He was the inaugural CEO of the Cancer Council Australia (1998–2006), former president of the Clinical Oncological Society of Australia (COSA), and co-chair of the St. Gallen International Breast Cancer Conference. He was also the first non-American to be elected to the Board of Directors of the American Society of Clinical Oncology. Cancer is a group of diseases involving abnormal cell growth with the potential to invade or spread to other parts of the body. These contrast with benign tumors, which do not spread. Possible signs and symptoms include a lump, abnormal bleeding, prolonged cough, unexplained weight loss, and a change in bowel movements. Clive Deverall, AM, HonDLitt (Curtin), (born 1 August 1941) was the CEO of the Cancer Council of Western Australia from 1977 to 2000. Career He worked in Western Australia in the cancer control sector from 1977 to 2000. Following his retirement from Cancer Council Western Australia in 2000, he has represented consumer interests in settings that include the National Health and Medical Research Council, Medical Services Advisory Committee, the Department of Health & Ageing and Cancer Voices. In 2005 he worked with the Australian Senate, assisting in writing the report of its inquiry into cancer services in Australia.
