The Canary (website)
''The Canary'' is a left-wing news website based in the United Kingdom. While focusing on UK political affairs, it also has a "Global" section, a satire section ("Off the Perch"), and "Science", "Environment", and "Health" sections. Founded in 2015 by Kerry-Anne Mendoza and her wife Nancy Mendoza, the website increased in popularity around the time of the 2017 United Kingdom general election. It was initially funded through a combination of advertising and a group of about 1500 supporters, but by 2020 had moved to a largely reader-funded model. According to Press Gazette, in July 2022 ''The Canary'' was the third most popular politics news website in the UK behind Politico and Politics Home. Kerry-Anne Mendoza
Kerry-Anne Mendoza (born 13 June 1981) is an English writer, journalist and social commentator. She is the former editor-in-chief of ''The Canary'', a left-wing new media outlet. Early life and education Mendoza was brought up in Kingswood, near Bristol. She was educated at Kingsfield Secondary School, then started a history degree at the University of Sussex. After a fact-finding programme in Israel/Palestine in 2002 (during the Al-Aqsa Intifada, a Palestinian uprising against Israel), in which she witnessed an Israeli attack in the West Bank city of Ramallah, she withdrew from the university course. She later described her two visits to Palestine in 2002, and the Iraq War of 2003, as key moments in her "radicalisation into social justice warrior". Career Mendoza has been a project manager for high street banks and is a former management consultant in banking, local government and the NHS, who left her job to join the Occupy protest. Austerity
Austerity is a set of political-economic policies that aim to reduce government budget deficits through spending cuts, tax increases, or a combination of both. There are three primary types of austerity measures: higher taxes to fund spending, raising taxes while cutting spending, and lower taxes and lower government spending. Austerity measures are often used by governments that find it difficult to borrow or meet their existing obligations to pay back loans. The measures are meant to reduce the budget deficit by bringing government revenues closer to expenditures. Proponents of these measures state that this reduces the amount of borrowing required and may also demonstrate a government's fiscal discipline to creditors and credit rating agencies and make borrowing easier and cheaper as a result. ''The Independent'' is a British online newspaper. It was established in 1986 as a national morning printed paper. Nicknamed the ''Indy'', it began as a broadsheet and changed to tabloid format in 2003. The last printed edition was published on Saturday 26 March 2016, leaving only the online edition. The ''Daily Mirror'' is a British national daily tabloid. Founded in 1903, it is owned by parent company Reach plc. NewsGuard is a journalism and technology tool that rates the credibility of news and information websites and tracks online misinformation. It operates a browser extension and mobile apps for consumers as well as services for businesses, including a brand safety tool for advertisers and services for search engines, social media apps, cybersecurity firms, and government agencies. NewsGuard's trust ratings for news websites are based on nine criteria related to a source's journalistic practices.
