''The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial'' is a two-act play, of the courtroom drama type, that was dramatized for the stage by Herman Wouk, who adapted it from his own 1951 novel, ''The Caine Mutiny''. Wouk's novel covered a long stretch of time aboard United States Navy destroyer minesweeper USS ''Caine'' in the Pacific. It begins with Willis Keith's assignment to ''Caine'', chronicles the mismanagement of the ship under Philip Francis Queeg, explains how Steve Maryk relieved Queeg of command, gives an account of Maryk's court-martial, and describes the aftermath of the mutiny for all involved. Herman Wouk ( ; May 27, 1915 – May 17, 2019) was an American author best known for historical fiction such as ''The Caine Mutiny'' (1951) for which he won the Pulitzer Prize in fiction. Paul Gregory (August 27, 1920 – December 25, 2015) was an American film, theatre and television producer. Early life Gregory was the son of a butcher and graduated from Lincoln High School in Des Moines, Iowa, in 1938. Career Gregory went to Hollywood where he worked as a personal assistant for clients like Horace Heidt and Carmen Cavallaro. He became friends with actor Charles Laughton and organized a successful lecture tour which Laughton made through the United States between 1949 and 1950. They earned $200,000 during this reading tour; the money worked as the basis for other projects. Gregory afterwards produced 17 Broadway plays during the 1950s and 1960s, among them ''The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial'', '' 3 for Tonight'', ''The Marriage Go-Around'' and ''Lord Pengo''. Lloyd Benedict Nolan (August 11, 1902 – September 27, 1985) was an American film and television actor. Among his many roles, Nolan is remembered for originating the role of private investigator Michael Shayne in a series of 1940s B movies. Raymond Thomas Bailey (May 6, 1904 – April 15, 1980) was an American actor, and comedian on the Broadway stage, films, and television.
