The Bundles
The Bundles were an anti-folk music group formed in 2001 by Jeffrey Lewis and The Moldy Peaches' Kimya Dawson. Their members included, in addition to Lewis and Dawson, Lewis' brother Jack, Brooklyn-based drummer Anders Griffen, and indie rock musician Karl Blau. They released one eponymous album, on March 9, 2010, on K Records K Records is an independent record label in Olympia, Washington founded in 1982. Artists on the label included early releases by Beck, Modest Mouse and Built to Spill. The record label has been called "key to the development of independent music .... Anti-folk
Anti-folk (sometimes referred to as unfolk) is a music genre that emerged in the 1980s in response to the remnants of the 1960s folk music scene. Anti-folk music was made to mock the perceived seriousness of the time's mainstream music scene, and artists have the intention to protest with their mocking and clever lyrics. History In the United States Anti-folk was introduced by artists who were unable to obtain gigs at established folk venues in Greenwich Village such as Folk City and The Speakeasy. Jeffrey Lewis
Jeffrey Lewis (born November 20, 1975) is an American singer-songwriter and comic book artist. Early life Lewis was born in New York City and grew up on the Lower East Side. He attended State University of New York at Purchase, graduating in 1997 with a degree in Literature. His Senior Literary Thesis was on the comic book ''Watchmen''. Lewis also lectured on the topic of ''Watchmen'' at the Institute For Cultural Studies at the University of Leuven, Belgium, in 2000, and the text of his lecture ("The Dual Nature of Apocalypse in Watchmen") was published in the book ''The Graphic Novel'', edited by Jan Baetens, in 2001. Starting in 2000, he spent about two years living in Austin, Texas, playing open mic nights, working odd jobs and distributing his autobiographical comics to local coffee shops. The Moldy Peaches
The Moldy Peaches were an American indie group founded by Adam Green and Kimya Dawson. Leading proponents of the anti-folk scene, the band has been on hiatus since 2004. The appearance of their song " Anyone Else but You" in the film ''Juno'' significantly raised their profile; Dawson and Green made a handful of reunion appearances together in December 2007. History Green and Dawson met at Exile on Main Street Records in Mount Kisco, New York, and began working together. Green put out a 7" Ep called "X-Ray Vision" under the name The Moldy Peaches, featuring recordings he made from 1994–96 with Dawson and various other friends, notably Jules Sheridan, a songwriter based in Scotland. Green and Dawson recorded a CDR album in 1998 under the name Moldy Peaches 2000 called ''FER THE KIDS'' before Dawson moved to Port Townsend, Washington. Kimya Dawson
Kimya Dawson (born November 17, 1972) is an American folk singer-songwriter, one half of the anti-folk duo the Moldy Peaches. Dawson's work with the Moldy Peaches earned them a cult following and critical acclaim, with their 2001 song " Anyone Else But You" landing a spot in multiple acclaimed indie film soundtracks. "Anyone Else But You" as performed by Michael Cera and Elliot Page charted on the Billboard Hot 100 after its prominent inclusion in the 2007 film ''Juno'', the soundtrack of which includes several songs by Dawson and her associated musical acts. The song remains Dawson's highest charting single to date. Jack Lewis (musician)
Jack Lewis (born October 1980 in New York City, New York) is an American musician and artist. He was born and raised on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. He is the younger brother of Jeffrey Lewis, whom he has often performed and recorded with. Jack Lewis is now based in Portland, Oregon and currently is a long term substitute at Woodrow Wilson High School. Biography Lewis is a 1998 graduate of LaGuardia High School, where he focused on the visual arts. He went on to graduate from Bard College with a degree in visual arts in June, 2002. After graduating he worked at the Museum of Modern Art for the video curator Barbara London and Sally Berger. Anders Griffen
Anders Griffen is a drummer, composer, and trumpet player from Brooklyn, New York. Griffen works in a range of contexts including folk, jazz, pop, improvised music, and modern dance theater. Career Griffen is known for his work with songwriters and jazz musicians, playing the drum set sensitively and quietly enough to accompany acoustic music. His first appearance on record was in 1997, a tribute to Charles Moffett entitled ''Vision Blue'' with tenor saxophonist, Frank Lowe. Karl Blau
Karl Blau is an American indie rock and country vocalist, producer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, but originally from Anacortes, Washington. A member of the Knw-Yr-Own/K Records collective, he is known for his musical output, live shows, and self recording and distribution. Blau incorporates elements of folk, dub, R&B, bossa nova, grunge, hip hop, drone, country, & worldbeat. Career Blau has released more than 40 records in 20-odd years, many self-released in handmade packaging and mailed to subscribers as part of his Kelp Lunacy Advanced Plagiarism series, and others on iconic indie Northwest labels K Records and knw-yr-own. The Bundles (album)
The Bundles is the only studio album by the supergroup of the same name, released on March 9, 2010 on K Records. Background and recording Fellow anti-folk artists Jeffrey Lewis and Kimya Dawson first met in 2001, and created their first five songs that year. Lewis' brother, Jack, Washington-based musician Karl Blau and drummer Anders Griffen soon joined them in the songwriting and recording process. Half of the songs on ''The Bundles'' were previously released on the Lewis-Dawson collaboration "AFNY Collaborations Volume I" in 2002, but the versions on that album differed significantly from those on ''The Bundles'' because on the latter record, unlike on the former, they were recorded with The Bundles' new band. K Records is an independent record label in Olympia, Washington founded in 1982. Artists on the label included early releases by Beck, Modest Mouse and Built to Spill. The record label has been called "key to the development of independent music" since the 1980s. The label was founded by Beat Happening frontman Calvin Johnson and managed for many years by Candice Pedersen.
