''The Buddenbrooks'' (german: Buddenbrooks) is a 1959 West German drama film directed by Alfred Weidenmann and starring Liselotte Pulver, Hansjörg Felmy, Nadja Tiller. It was released in two parts.Nowell-Smith p.149 It is an adaptation of the 1901 novel of the same name by Thomas Mann. The art director Robert Herlth designed the film's sets. It was filmed at the Wandsbek Studios. Location shooting took place in Hamburg and Lübeck. Wandsbek Studios
The Wandsbek Studios are film production and television studios located in Wandsbek, a district of the German city of Hamburg. The complex was established in 1948 when Real Film, set up the previous year, acquired a site in Wandsbek for construction of a studio. Real Film was one of the first German companies to receive a production licence in the wake of the Second World War. The studios were located in the British Zone of Occupation which in 1949 became part of West Germany. Historically the film industry had been centered in Berlin, but as much of this was now under Communist East German control, West German production shifted to Hamburg and the Bavaria Studios in Munich. While Wandsbek was primarily the base of Real Film, it also rented out space to other companies for their productions, such as the 1952 hit ''Toxi'' (1952). Robert Graf (November 18, 1923 – February 4, 1966) was a German actor who played the role of Werner, "The Ferret" in the 1963 movie '' The Great Escape''. Graf was born in Witten, Germany in 1923. In 1942, after completing his Abitur, he was conscripted into the Wehrmacht and sent to the Eastern Front. He was wounded in 1944, and assigned to war production duties in Munich, where he began his study of theater. In 1952, Graf married the actress Selma Urfer and had three children. Rudolf Antonius Heinrich Platte (12 February 1904 – 18 December 1984) was a German actor. Biography Born in Hörde, Westphalia (today part of Dortmund) the son of a merchant, his family moved to Hildesheim three years later. Rudolf left school at the age of 16 to take acting lessons, making his debut in 1925 as Shylock in Shakespeare's ''The Merchant of Venice'' in Düsseldorf. Two years later he moved to Berlin, where he together with Werner Finck and Hans Deppe founded the cabaret '' Die Katakombe''. From 1929 onward, Platte performed in more than 200 film roles, embodying the shy and underestimated, likeable "Little Man".
