The Boys Of 86
The Boys of 86 are the West Ham United team of the 1985–86 season. The West Ham team from this season achieved their highest ever position in the Football League, third in the First Division. They were challenging for the title throughout the season which has been described as West Ham's greatest ever season. With one game remaining they were second in the league eventually finishing third behind champions, Liverpool and Everton. The season is often used as a comparison for more modern West Ham United teams. Background Managed by John Lyall, West Ham had finished 16th in the previous season but additions of Frank McAvennie and Mark Ward combined with the partnership of McAvennie and Tony Cottee and the captaincy of Alvin Martin made West Ham genuine title challengers. Alan Devonshire
Alan Ernest Devonshire (born 13 April 1956) is an English former professional footballer who is the current manager of Maidenhead United. He was a wide midfielder who played for West Ham United, with whom he won the FA Cup in 1980, and Watford, where he finished his career in 1992. Devonshire won eight caps for England between 1980 and 1983. He subsequently became a manager with Maidenhead United, Hampton & Richmond Borough and Braintree Town. Geoff Pike
Geoffrey Alan Pike (born 28 September 1956) is an English former footballer who played as a midfielder. He spent the majority of his career at West Ham United. Pike played his early football in Thurrock and later with Gidea Park Rangers. He joined West Ham United in 1974 and was a member of the side that reached the 1975 FA Youth Cup Final. He made his league debut on 6 March 1976 against Birmingham City. In 1976, West Ham loaned him to the Hartford Bicentennials of the North American Soccer League. He returned on loan in 1977, but by that time the team had moved and was now known as the Connecticut Bicentennials. Paul Goddard (born 12 October 1959 in Harlington, Middlesex, England) is an English former professional footballer and manager. Biography and career During his playing career, he gained caps for England U21s (scoring five times) and earned a single full cap for the England team against Iceland in June 1982 (scoring once). In his fifteen-year career as a centre forward, he played for Queens Park Rangers, West Ham United, Newcastle United, Derby County, Millwall and Ipswich Town. A QPR youth, Goddard was West Ham's record signing when he moved to Upton Park for £800,000 in 1980. He was West Ham's top scorer in the 1982–83 season, and scored 71 goals in 213 League and Cup matches for the club. George Michael R. Parris (born 11 September 1964) is an English former professional footballer who played as a midfielder or defender for West Ham United, Birmingham City, and Brighton & Hove Albion. Alan William Dickens (born 3 September 1964) is an English former professional footballer who played in the Football League as a midfielder. He played the majority of his football at West Ham United and Chelsea, and later played non-league football. He had a short spell as manager of Barking.
