''The Boondock Saints'' is a 1999 American-Canadian Vigilante film, vigilante Action film, action thriller film written and directed by Troy Duffy in his list of directorial debuts, feature directorial debut. Starring Willem Dafoe, Sean Patrick Flanery, Norman Reedus, David Della Rocco, and Billy Connolly, the film follows Irish fraternal twin brothers Connor and Murphy MacManus (Flanery and Reedus), who become vigilantes after killing two members of the Russian mafia in self defense. After both experience an epiphany, the twins, together with their best friend "Funny Man" Rocco (Rocco), set out on a mission to rid Boston of the criminal underworld in the name of God, all the while being pursued by Special agent, FBI Special Agent Paul Smecker (Dafoe). Duffy, who had never written a screenplay before, said he was inspired by personal experience while living with his brother Taylor in Los Angeles. Troy Duffy
Troy Duffy is an American filmmaker and musician. He has directed two films, ''The Boondock Saints'' and its sequel ''The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day''. Duffy was the subject of the 2003 documentary film ''Overnight (2003 film), Overnight''. Film career Duffy moved to Los Angeles in his twenties to pursue a music career with his band, The Brood. While seeking gigs, he worked at a bar where he wrote the script for the film ''The Boondock Saints'' during his break periods. The inspiration for the screenplay happened one day when he came home from his job to find a dead woman being wheeled out of a drug dealer's apartment across the hall. Duffy then rented a computer and wrote the screenplay for ''The Boondock Saints'' based on his disgust at what he saw: The script featured two brothers in Boston dedicated to killing Mafia thugs.
