The 152nd Boat Race took place on 2 April 2006. Held annually, the Boat Race is a side-by-side rowing race between crews from the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge along the River Thames. Oxford, whose crew contained the first French rower in the history of the event, won the race by five lengths which was umpired by former Oxford rower Simon Harris. In the reserve race Goldie beat Isis and Oxford won the Women's Boat Race. The 151st Boat Race took place on 27 March 2005. Oxford won the race by two lengths in a time of 16 minutes 41 seconds. The race, Referee#Rowing, umpired by the six-time Boat Race winner Boris Rankov, featured seven Olympic rowers. It was the first time the event was broadcast in the United Kingdom on ITV (TV channel), ITV. The 2015 Boat Races took place on 11 April 2015. Held annually, The Boat Race is a side-by-side rowing race between crews from the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge along a tidal stretch of the River Thames in south-west London. For the first time in the history of the event, the men's, women's and both reserves' races were all held on the Tideway; in the men's reserve race, Cambridge's Goldie faced Oxford's Isis after the women's race, as a preliminary to the main men's race, while the women's reserve race, held the day before, saw Oxford's Osiris race against Cambridge's Blondie. Oxford's women won the first running of the Women's Boat Race on the Tideway, and the 70th overall, by six and a half lengths, to take the overall record in the event to 41–29 in Cambridge's favour. Jake Wetzel
Jacob Wetzel (born December 26, 1976) is a Canadian rower. He has represented both Canada and the United States at the World Championships and the Olympics. He was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. College years As a teenager, Wetzel was on the Canadian Junior Cycling team; he only began rowing in the fall of 1997 at the University of California, Berkeley. His success was immediate and extraordinary. His collegiate boat was undefeated and won the freshman 8 event at the 1998 Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championship (IRA). That summer Wetzel tried out for and made the Canadian National team in the pair event (2-) and finished seventh at the World Championships in Cologne, Germany. Kieran West
Kieran Martin West (born 18 September 1977) is a retired English rower and Olympic champion who represented Great Britain. Education Born in Kingston upon Thames, West was educated at Dulwich College, in south-east London, before going to Christ's College, Cambridge in 1995, to study for a BA in Economics and Land Economy, followed by a PGCE in Mathematics three years later. On graduating from his second degree he taught Mathematics at King's College School, Wimbledon for two years, before returning to his studies in 2004. Barney Williams (rower)
Barney Guillermo Williams (born March 13, 1977) is a Canadian rower who won a gold medal at the 2003 world championships in Milan and a silver in the same event at the 2004 Summer Olympics. He also has two wins and a second in the four in Rowing World Cup events. On April 18, 2021Barney resigned from his position as head coach of the University of Victoria's women's varsity rowing programin mutual agreement with the athletic department. After several reports of demeaning and aggressive behaviour towards student athletes, Rowing Canada ruled he violated their code of conduct as well as the National Coaching Certification Program code of ethics. Sebastian Schulte (born 13 December 1978 in Wiesbaden) is a German former representative rower. He was a 2006 world champion in the German men's eight and an Olympian. He consistently represented in the German men's eight - the Deutschlandachter- at World Rowing Championships and Olympic Games between 2001 and 2007. Jamie Schroeder
Jamie Twist Schroeder (born September 9, 1981, in Wilmette, Illinois) is an American rower, and a victorious Oxford Blue. Education Schroeder was educated at Choate Rosemary Hall, Connecticut '99, and Stanford University '05 from where she has a BSc in biology and an MSc in bioengineering. She originally enrolled at Northwestern University, where she began rowing in 2001 before transferring to Stanford. She matriculated in 2005 at Christ Church, Oxford where she studied cardiac energetics and earned a doctoral degree in 2010 from the Department of Physiology, Anatomy, and Genetics. Thorsten Engelmann
Thorsten Engelmann (born 20 July 1981 in East Berlin, East Germany) is a German rower. Engelmann started rowing at age 9 because his father was the president of a rowing club in Berlin. He continued training while earning his pre-diploma in economics at school, and was a member of the German national squad. Engelmann became world champion in the eight in 2006, won the silver medal in the 2002 and 2007 World Championships, and won bronze twice, in 2001 and 2005. He placed fourth in the Summer Olympic Games in 2004. Engelmann is also a former World Under–23 champion from 2000 and was the overall world cup winner in 2001–2003 and 2005. Colin Smith (born 23 September 1983 in Harare, Zimbabwe) is a Zimbabwean-born British rower, Olympic silver medallist and three times an Oxford Blue. He now currently pursues a job as a lawyer. Bow (rowing)
In rowing, the bow (or bowman or bowperson) is the rower seated closest to the bow of the boat, which is the forward part of the boat. The other end of the boat is called the stern, and the rower seated there is called the stroke. In a bow-coxed boat, the coxswain is closest to the boat's bow, but the rower closest to the bow is still considered the "bow." In coxless boats, bow is usually the person who keeps an eye on the water behind themselves to avoid accidents. The rower at the opposite end of the boat is referred to as stroke.
