The Blacks (film)
''The Blacks'' ( hr, Crnci) is a 2009 Croatian drama film directed by Goran Dević and Zvonimir Jurić. The film was selected as the Croatian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 83rd Academy Awards, but it did not make the final shortlist. Plot The main title of the film refers to a fictional paramilitary formation, which uses the nickname of a unit of the Croatian paramilitary known as the Croatian defence forces and by the German occupied Independent State of Croatia during World War II.The plot takes place in the post-war Osijek. The soldiers were given the task of retrieving the bodies of fallen comrades from the minefield. The plot includes real events related to the "Garage" case, a war crime in which Serb prisoners of war were tortured. Goran Dević
Goran Dević (born 1971) is a Croatian film director and screenwriter. Born in Sisak Dević was formally educated at the University of Zagreb's Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (archeology department) and the Academy of Dramatic Art (film directing department). Since the early 2000s Dević directed a number of short subjects and short documentaries. His feature film directorial debut (which he co-directed and co-written with Zvonimir Jurić) was a critically acclaimed 2009 psychological war drama titled '' The Blacks''. The film deals with a fictional Croatian Army unit who refuse to lay down their arms following the end of the Croatian War of Independence. Independent Croatia has submitted films for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film since 1992. The award is handed out annually by the United States Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to a feature-length motion picture produced outside the United States that contains primarily non-English dialogue. It was not created until the 1956 Academy Awards, in which a competitive Academy Award of Merit, known as the Best Foreign Language Film Award, was introduced for non-English speaking films, and has been given annually since. Since achieving independence from Yugoslavia, Croatia has submitted 30 films for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film , but none have been nominated for an Oscar. This is a list of submissions to the 83rd Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has invited the film industries of various countries to submit their best film for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film every year since the award was created in 1956. The award is presented annually by the Academy to a feature-length motion picture produced outside the United States that contains primarily non-English dialogue. The Foreign Language Film Award Committee oversees the process and reviews all the submitted films. The deadline for all countries to send in their submissions was 1 October 2010. The submitted motion pictures must be first released theatrically in their respective countries between 1 October 2009, and 30 September 2010. Pula Film Festival ( hr, Pulski filmski festival) is an annual Croatian film festival, established in 1954. It is held in a Roman amphitheater known as the Pula Arena. Pula Film Festival is the oldest Croatian film festival and is usually held in the summer, in July or August. Apart from film screenings open to the public, the annual Croatian film industry awards are also traditionally presented at the festival. The awards presented at the festival (called Golden Arenas) are the main national film awards in the country, and they serve as the Croatian equivalent of the American Academy Awards.
