Critical reception John Bush of AllMusic rated the album four stars out of five, and stated that the album is both a "studied" and "more mature, calculated album" than its predecessor ''Life Thru a Lens'' (1997) "from a pop star who's often gloried in being immature and spontaneous." He noted the album "may suffer from comparisons to its excellent predecessor, but it also finds Robbie Williams weathering the sophomore storm quite well." ''NME'' rated the album 8/10, saying "boy, what a record" and that Williams' "writing skills ...

On 7 September 1998, it was released as the first track from the album and became Williams' first single to top the UK Singles Chart. The song also received extensive airplay in the United States and Canada, where it was the lead single from Williams' 1999 compilation album, '' The Ego Has Landed''. The song borrows heavily from the musical arrangement of John Barry's " You Only Live Twice", the title track of the 1967 James Bond film, said to be one of Williams' favourite James Bond movies. However, it is a re-recording in a slightly different key instead of a direct sample for reasons of cost. Recording and composing The song that would become "Millennium" started being written in 1997. Robbie Williams and producer Guy Chambers got along at Blah Street Studios in Hampshire, where Williams expressed the idea to do something based on James Bond. From that ...

It was written by Williams and Guy Chambers. In March 1998, the track peaked at No. 3 on the UK Singles Chart. It is certified gold for sales of over 400,000 copies. Background Williams and Chambers were inspired to write a 'Who-esque' song after watching the Rolling Stones film '' Rock and Roll Circus'' together. "When we started writing the demo there was a furious jungle beat underneath it. It was so hardcore it got me very excited, and I still get excited listening to it now. It's not really heavy metal, it's more like camp rock opera!" The lyrics are mostly innuendoes and double entendre, telling the story of a man trying to persuade someone to cheat on their boyfriend with him. Although the sex of this person is never mentioned, it is worth noting that the lyrics include the phrase ''mon cher'', which means ''my dear'' ...

Angels (Robbie Williams Song)
"Angels" is a song by the English singer-songwriter Robbie Williams. It was included on Williams's debut solo album, ''Life thru a Lens'' (1997), and released as a single on 1 December 1997. "Angels" was written by Williams and Guy Chambers, based on an earlier song written by Ray Heffernan. Williams said he wrote "Angels" with Chambers about his aunt and uncle. Heffernan asserts that he wrote the first version in 1996, after his partner had a miscarriage, and finished it with Williams after meeting him by chance in Dublin. Williams confirmed that he had recorded a demo with Heffernan but said he rewrote the song significantly with Chambers. To avoid a lawsuit, Williams bought the rights to the song from Heffernan before it was released. "Angels" is Williams's best-selling single, and the 34th-bestselling UK single of the 1990s. It was voted the best song of the previous 25 years at the 2005 Brit Awards, and in 2005 Britons voted "Angels" the song they most wanted played at thei ...

The song became a top-10 hit in the United Kingdom, peaking at number eight on the UK Singles Chart. A demo version of "Lazy Days" is included as a B-side on the "Millennium" CD2 single. Critical reception A reviewer from ''Music Week'' rated the song three out of five, adding, " Gary's former colleague continues to occupy indie-pop territory with a solid enough song. However, it lacks the killer chorus needed to better his previous chart performances." The magazine's Martin Aston described "Lazy Days" as "a hazy-lazy, summery feel, and an instant indication of Williams and uyChambers' Beatlesy tastes." David Sinclair from ''The Times'' viewed it as a "big, c ...

Life Thru A Lens
''Life thru a Lens'' is the debut solo studio album by English singer-songwriter Robbie Williams. It was Williams' first solo album following his departure from Take That. Released on 29 September 1997 through Chrysalis Records, it is influenced by Britpop, a departure from the poppier tone of music Take That employed. The album's working name was ''The Show-Off Must Go On''. The album's first three singles, "Old Before I Die", "Lazy Days" and " South of the Border" (the only single to miss the top 10), were all moderate successes, but it was the fourth single "Angels" which catapulted Williams to international fame as a solo artist. Peaking at number 4, it has sold over 1 million copies in the UK and is his biggest-selling single to date. Fifth and final single " Let Me Entertain You" reached number three, becoming the album's third top-5 hit. "Freedom," Robbie's first solo success, a cover of George Michael's 1990 hit, is not featured on the album. ''Life thru a Lens'' debute ...

Old Before I Die
"Old Before I Die" is a song by English singer-songwriter Robbie Williams, released as the first single from his debut album, ''Life thru a Lens'' (1997). The Oasis-influenced song became a number-two hit in the United Kingdom and a number-one hit in Spain following its release on 14 April 1997. Critical reception Pan-European magazine ''Music & Media'' commented, "Williams certainly can't be accused of playing it safe in the wake of his departure from U.K popsters Take That. Instead, post-Freedom, he's opted for a radical change of musical direction. Gone is the sweet, middle of the road style, in favour of a solid and confident rock sound, somewhat reminiscent of his new pals, Oasis." A reviewer from ''Music Week'' rated the song four out of five, describing it as "a confidently composed return from the former Take That man, boasting a strong vocal, tuneful Beatlesesque melody and a ILR-friendly hook. On this evidence, Owen, Barlow and co may be left in Williams shadow." The ...
