''The Best of Pete Townshend'' (sometimes listed with the subtitle '' oolwalkingsmoothtalkingstraightsmokingfirestoking', after a lyric from the song "Misunderstood" which is printed on the front cover) is a compilation album by Pete Townshend released in 1996. It was released in the UK on the Virgin label, and the US on Atlantic. The compilation included songs from Pete Townshend's solo career as well as two songs from the album Rough Mix with Ronnie Lane. It also included the single edit of English Boy" and the first appearance of "Let My Love Open the Door (E. Cola Mix)" and the Psychoderelict outtake, "Uneasy Street". Pete Townshend
Peter Dennis Blandford Townshend (; born 19 May 1945) is an English musician. He is co-founder, leader, guitarist, second lead vocalist and principal songwriter of the Who, one of the most influential rock bands of the 1960s and 1970s. Townshend has written more than 100 songs for 12 of the Who's studio albums. These include concept albums, the rock operas ''Tommy'' (1969) and ''Quadrophenia'' (1973), plus popular rock radio staples such as ''Who's Next'' (1971); as well as dozens more that appeared as non-album singles, bonus tracks on reissues, and tracks on rarities compilation albums such as ''Odds & Sods'' (1974). Atlantic Recording Corporation (simply known as Atlantic Records) is an American record label founded in October 1947 by Ahmet Ertegun and Herb Abramson. ''Psychoderelict'' is a concept album written, produced and engineered by Pete Townshend. Some characters and issues presented in this work were continued in Townshend's later opus ''The Boy Who Heard Music'', first presented on The Who's album '' Endless Wire'' and then adapted as a rock musical. ''Psychoderelict'' is Townshend's sixth and most recent solo album to date. ''Rough Mix'' is an album by the Who's guitarist Pete Townshend and former Small Faces and Faces bassist Ronnie Lane. The album was released in September 1977 as Polydor 2442 in the UK and MCA 2295 in the US. It peaked at number 44 on the UK album chart, and at number 45 on the ''Billboard'' 200. Content On 21 October 1976, the Who closed a brief North American tour in Toronto at Maple Leaf Gardens, a show that would be the last with Keith Moon before a paying audience. The Who then took a hiatus as band members pursued various individual interests. Pete Townshend had been initially contacted by Ronnie Lane to produce his next album, the project instead turning into a full-blown collaboration between the pair. Ronnie Lane
Ronald Frederick Lane (1 April 1946 – 4 June 1997) was an English musician and songwriter who is best known as the bass guitarist and founding member of Small Faces (1965–69) and subsequently Faces (1969–73). Lane formed Small Faces in 1965 after meeting Steve Marriott, with whom he subsquently wrote many of their hit singles including " All or Nothing", "Itchycoo Park" and " Lazy Sunday". After Marriott left Small Faces in 1968, bandmembers Lane, Ian McLagan and Kenny Jones were joined by Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood to form Faces. Like Small Faces, the band achieved critical and commercial success. Lane quit the Faces in 1973 and subsequently collaborated with other musicians, leading his own bands and pursuing a solo career. In 1977, he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. He was supported by charity projects and financial contributions from friends, former bandmates and fans. The song is used to introduce the character Ray High, as well as journalist Ruth Streeting, host of ''Street on the Street''. "Rough Boys" is the debut solo single written and performed by English musician Pete Townshend, released in 1980 from his second solo album '' Empty Glass''. Known for its homoerotic lyrics, the song was a minor chart hit in both the United Kingdom and the United States. Background Townshend dedicated "Rough Boys" to the Sex Pistols as well as his children, Emma and Minta, on the album sleeve of ''Empty Glass''.
