''The Ataxian'' is a documentary film of Kyle Bryant, a sufferer of Friedreich's ataxia. The film premiered at the Dances With Films Festival in 2015. Kyle Bryant
Kyle Bryant (October 5, 1981) is an athlete, speaker and the spokesperson for the Friedreich's Ataxia Research Alliance (FARA). Bryant is the founder and event director of rideATAXIA – a nationwide bike ride fundraiser benefiting FARA. Early life Bryant was born in Auburn, California to Mike and Diane Bryant. He has a brother Collin (born 1979) who is a firefighter. Diagnosis Bryant was diagnosed at age 17 with Friedreich's ataxia, a rare, life-shortening, degenerative neuromuscular disorder. About one in 50,000 people in the United States have FA. Friedreich's ataxia is a genetic disorder with symptoms including muscle weakness, loss of coordination, vision impairment, slurred speech, hearing loss, scoliosis (curvature of the spine), and a life-shortening heart condition. Friedreich's Ataxia
Friedreich's ataxia (FRDA or FA) is an autosomal-recessive genetic disease that causes difficulty walking, a loss of sensation in the arms and legs, and impaired speech that worsens over time. Symptoms generally start between 5 and 20 years of age. Many develop hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and require a mobility aid such as a cane, walker, or wheelchair in their teens. As the disease progresses, some affected people lose their sight and hearing. Other complications may include scoliosis and diabetes mellitus. The condition is caused by mutations in the ''FXN'' gene on chromosome 9, which makes a protein called frataxin. In FRDA, cells produce less frataxin. Degeneration of nerve tissue in the spinal cord causes the ataxia; particularly affected are the sensory neurons essential for directing muscle movement of the arms and legs through connections with the cerebellum. Race Across America
The Race Across America, or RAAM, is an ultra-distance road cycling race held across the United States that started in 1982 as the Great American Bike Race. RAAM is one of the longest annual endurance events in the world. All entrants must prove their abilities by competing in any of several qualifying events, completing a course within a specified time period. In length the RAAM is comparable to the Tour de France, but the races differ to a great extent. The courses of both races have varied over the years. However, in the Race Across America, the direction has always been from the west coast to the east coast of the United States, approximately 3,000 miles (4,800 km), making it a transcontinental event. KOVR (channel 13) is a television station licensed to Stockton, California, United States, broadcasting the CBS network to the Sacramento area. It is owned and operated by the network's CBS News and Stations division alongside CW affiliate KMAX-TV (channel 31).
