''The Assassination of Saint Peter Martyr'' was a 1528-1529 oil painting by Titian, originally painted on panel and later transferred to canvas. It was destroyed in a fire at Santi Giovanni e Paolo, Venice in 1867, though a 1691 copy by Johann Carl Loth hangs in its place. History Commission and reception In 1528 Titian took part in a competition with Il Pordenone and Palma il Vecchio for the commission for a large altarpiece showing the martyrdom of Saint Peter Martyr for the altar of that saint's confraternity in San Zanipolo, the main Dominican centre in Venice.Zuffi, cit., pag. 142. Titian won the commission, in part since the Dominicans did not want to be outdone by the Franciscans, who already had Titian's ''Assumption'' and '' Pesaro Altarpiece'', both at the basilica dei Frari. Niccolò Tribolo
Niccolò di Raffaello di Niccolò dei Pericoli, called "Il Tribolo" (1500 – 7 September 1550) was an Italian Mannerist artist in the service of Cosimo I de' Medici in his natal city of Florence. Life Niccolò di Raffaello began as an apprentice to a woodcarver but, while still in his teens, was taken up as an assistant by Andrea Sansovino. Giorgio Vasari, in his ''Vite'', mentioned numerous early figures and fountains by Tribolo that can no longer be traced. A court artist like his successor Bernardo Buontalenti, he was expected to function well as a member of a team; like Buontalenti's, his name has been overshadowed by greater personalities. For example, in the 17th and 18th centuries, connoisseurs attributed to Michelangelo some of Tribolo's drawings for sculptural niches and wall fountains, a tribute to Tribolo's bravura as a draughtsman and a sign of Michelangelo's influence on his style. Gaetano Milanesi
Gaetano Milanesi (1813-1895) was an Italian scholar and writer on the history of art. Biography Milanesi was born at Siena, where he studied law, and in 1838 he obtained an appointment in the public library. In 1856 he was elected member of the Accademia della Crusca, in which capacity he took part in the compilation of its famous but still unfinished dictionary, and two years later was appointed assistant keeper of the Tuscan archives, in Florence; then he took charge of the famous Medici archives, whence he collected a vast body of material on the history of Italian art, not all of which is yet published. In 1889 he became director of the archives, but retired in 1892, and died three years later. Giovanni Battista Cavalcaselle
Giovanni Battista Cavalcaselle (22 January 1819 – 31 October 1897) was an Italian writer and art critic, best known as part of "Crowe and Cavalcaselle", for the many works in English on art history he co-authored with Joseph Archer Crowe. Their multi-volume ''A New History of Painting in Italy'' continued to be revised and republished until 1909, after both were dead. Though now outdated, these are still often cited by modern art historians. Biography Cavalcaselle was born in Legnago, Veneto. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice. The ducat () coin was used as a trade coin in Europe from the later Middle Ages from the 13th to 19th centuries. Daniel Nijs (or Nys) (1572-1647) was a Flemish art dealer. Life Born in Wesel into a family of Protestant refugees from the Spanish Netherlands (now Belgium), he moved to Venice in 1596. There he worked for the firm of his cousins, the Gabrys, while also laying the foundation of his own firm. By 1615 he had made his fortune and possessed a major art collection which was described by Vincenzo Scamozzi, Giulio Cesare Gigli and Constantijn Huygens. In 1622 he came into contact with Ferdinando Gonzaga, Duke of Mantua to whom Nijs began supplying luxury goods. Five years later the 7th Duke, Vincenzo II Gonzaga, who was in dire financial straits, agreed to sell the cream of the paintings in the Gonzaga art collection to Nijs.
