The Arkaba Projects
The Arkaba Projects (1957–1967) are a range of works undertaken in the Australian state of South Australia during the ongoing association between architect Robert Dickson and entrepreneur Istvan (Steve) Zsolt, consisting of restaurants, flats, motels, and hotels.Dickson, Robert. Typically in odd or difficult circumstances, the projects often commenced with little preparation and required urgent design and construction responses. The architectural opportunities he presented were challenging, although this meant an increased responsibility in design expression and also made for unique design freedom. The Arkaba restaurant and hotel complex in Fullarton, South Australia were the practice’s first large scale commercial project and known for its intimate planning and straight forward use of natural materials. Robert Dickson (architect)
Robert Harold Dickson (8 April 1926 – 8 April 2014) was a South Australian architect. His many works contributed greatly to various aspects of South Australian architecture, ranging from conservation shelters to school buildings and residential projects. His most notable works are former premier, Don Dunstan's residence, the first townhouses in Adelaide and the University of Adelaide's Union House. He was described by Don Dunstan as the "premier architect". Whilst he spent the majority of his life practising in South Australia, he did work for a Milan-based Italian firm, Mangiarotti and Morasutti, for less than a year. He was also employed at Fry, Drew, Drake and Lasdun in London for a short time directly afterwards. Firms bearing his name in Adelaide were Dickson and Platten (1958-1973), Robert Dickson and Associates (1973-1990) and Robert Dickson Architects (1990-2014). Fullarton, South Australia
Fullarton is an inner southern suburb of Adelaide, South Australia in the City of Unley. It adjoins Parkside, Unley, Malvern, Highgate and Myrtle Bank and is bisected by Fullarton Road. Fullarton is bounded by Cremorne Street, Randolph Avenue and Fullarton Road in the north, Glen Osmond Road in the east, Fisher Street, Fullarton Road and Cheltenham Street in the south and Balmoral Street, Fisher Street and Windsor Street in the west.
