Gerda Holmes
Gerda Holmes, née Gerda Helen Elfrida Henius (April 2, 1891 – October 11, 1943), was an actress during the silent film era and in theater. She had major roles in numerous films including '' The Fable of Elvira and Farina and the Meal Ticket'' (1915) and ''The Iron Ring'' (1917) with Arthur Ashley. Holmes was Danish Her grandfather managed the Royal Danish Theatre in Copenhagen for more than two decades, and her father was a doctor in Chicago. She studied music in Denmark and began performing on stage there at about age 14. Her first marriage was to Rapley Holmes. The cover of the December 1916 issue of ''The Masses'' magazine featured a "stylish and very modern" portrait of Holmes by Frank Walts. The Essanay Film Manufacturing Company was an early American motion picture studio. The studio was founded in 1907 in Chicago, and later developed an additional film lot in Niles Canyon, California. Its various stars included Francis X. Bushman, Gloria Swanson and studio co-owner, actor and director, Broncho Billy Anderson. It is probably best known today for its series of Charlie Chaplin comedies from 1915-1916. In the late 1916 it merged with other studios and stopped issuing films in the fall of 1918. According to film historian Steve Massa, Essanay is one of the important early studios, with comedies as a particular strength. Founding The studio was founded in 1907 in Chicago by George K. Helen Dunbar
Helen Dunbar (born Katheryn Burke Lackey; October 10, 1863 – August 28, 1933) was an American theatrical performer and silent film actress. Career Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Dunbar first appeared with the Weber & Fields Stock Company, when it began its career on the New York stage. In 1899 she appeared in ''Whirl-i-gig'' and ''The Other Way'' at the Weber and Fields Broadway Music Hall. She also worked with the Charles Dillingham Company and the Boston Opera Company. She appeared in motion pictures beginning in 1912 and continued until 1926. Her stage and screen career extended over thirty-five years. Dunbar's film career started with ''Out of the Depths'' (1912). The production starred Francis X. Bushman. She became a leading lady for the old Essanay Studios. Lester Cuneo
Lester H. Cuneo (October 25, 1888 – November 1, 1925) was an American stage and silent film actor. He began acting in live theatre while still in his teens. Early years Born in Chicago, Illinois, Cuneo attended Culver Military Academy and was a law student at Northwestern University when he turned to acting. Career Cuneo's stage career included work with stock theater companies in Brooklyn, Chicago, and Winnepeg. Cuneo began a film career in 1912 with the Chicago-based Selig Polyscope Company then joined Essanay Studios in 1914. Working in early Hollywood, his popularity increased after he switched from comedic roles to the increasingly popular western film genre. However, his career was temporarily interrupted when he served with the United States Army during World War I. He served in France in 1917-1919 with the 33rd Division from Illinois. At war's end, Lester Cuneo returned to film and in the early 1920s set up his own production company making primarily western films. ...
