"The Afterlife" is a song by American singer-songwriter Paul Simon from his twelfth studio album, '' So Beautiful or So What'' (2011). The song humorously describes a recently deceased individual standing in line to meet with his heavenly creator in Heaven. The song peaked at number four on ''Billboard'' Adult Alternative Songs chart. Background The song concerns a man dying and getting to heaven, where he waits in line to meet with God, where everyone is "filling out forms and waiting in line to catch 'a glimpse of the divine.'" While in line, he unsuccessfully hits on a woman. When he finally meets God, he is taken aback, and can only spout gibberish. Paul Frederic Simon (born October 13, 1941) is an American musician, singer, songwriter and actor whose career has spanned six decades. He is one of the most acclaimed songwriters in popular music, both as a solo artist and as half of folk rock duo Simon & Garfunkel with Art Garfunkel. Simon was born in Newark, New Jersey, and grew up in the Queens, borough of Queens in New York City. He began performing with his schoolfriend Art Garfunkel in 1956 when they were still in their early teens. Vincent Nguini (July 1952 – December 8, 2017) was a Cameroonian musician and guitarist. Nguini was best known for his work with American singer-songwriter Paul Simon, with whom he recorded and toured for 30 years. Biography Nguini was born in July 1952 in Obala, Cameroon. He grew up interested in music through African music as well as American rock and jazz artists. He relocated to Paris in 1978 and began working as a session musician. He became the musical director for Manu Dibango in the late 1970s and subsequently lived in Washington, D.C. In 1987, he joined Paul Simon's band, first contributing to his 1990 album ''The Rhythm of the Saints''. On that album, he received a co-writing credit for the song "The Coast". Zydeco ( or , french: Zarico) is a music genre that evolved in southwest Louisiana by French Creole speakers which blends blues, rhythm and blues, and music indigenous to the Louisiana Creoles and the Native American people of Louisiana. ''So Beautiful or So What'' is the twelfth solo studio album by American folk rock singer-songwriter Paul Simon. It was released on April 8, 2011, by Hear Music. The album found Simon reuniting with former collaborator and record producer Phil Ramone. Having experimented with rhythm-based textures for much of the previous two decades, the singer returned to composing songs in a more traditional manner using only his acoustic guitar. These songs were further augmented by experimental recording practices in the studio. The album was largely recorded in a small cottage at Simon's home in New Canaan, Connecticut. The music of ''So Beautiful or So What'' features West African blues-inspired guitar playing, Indian-style percussion, and experimentation with samples, which ranged from an excerpt from a 1941 sermon to nighttime ambience in Kenya.
