The Abysmal Brute
''The Abysmal Brute'' is a novel by American writer Jack London, published in book form in 1913. It is a short novel, and could be regarded as a novelette. It first appeared in September 1911 in ''Popular Magazine''. In the story, a man who was brought up in a log cabin, and who is a newcomer to society, finds success as a boxer and recognizes corrupt practices in professional boxing. Background In 1910, when the story was written, London had become a famous writer, but he was worried that he had exhausted his ideas. ''The Abysmal Brute'' was based on one of several plot outlines he bought from Sinclair Lewis, an admirer of London who was at the beginning of his career. Reginald Leigh Dugmore (20 November 189116 June 1967), known professionally as Reginald Denny, was an English actor, aviator, and UAV pioneer. Acting career Born Reginald Leigh Dugmore on 20 November 1891 in Richmond, Surrey, England (part of Greater London since 1965), he came from a theatrical family; his father was actor and opera singer W.H. Jean Rogers (born Eleanor Dorothy Lovegren, March 25, 1916 – February 24, 1991) was an American actress who starred in serial films in the 1930s and low–budget feature films in the 1940s as a leading lady. ''Conflict'' is a 1936 American drama sport film directed by David Howard and starring John Wayne, Ward Bond and Jean Rogers. Plot Pat Glendon is a former lumberjack turned bare-knuckle boxer who travels the countryside as part of gambling scam operated by Gus "Knockout" Carrigan for a New York City syndicate. Glendon arrives ahead of the travelling boxing exhibition, building the confidence of the locals who in turn bet on Glendon to win, only to have him throw the fight. Mabel Julienne Scott
Mabel Julienne Scott (November 2, 1892 – October 1, 1976) was an American stage and silent movie actress. Biography Scott was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to Joseph and Martie Scott, of French and Norwegian heritage. A graduate of Northwestern Conservatory in Minneapolis, she also attended Stanley Girls' College. She came to New York City at the age of 17. When she failed to land the job she wanted, Scott played for a time with a stock company in Omaha, Nebraska. Scott made her Broadway (Manhattan) stage debut in ''The Barrier'' by Rex Beach. Scott's feature film debut came in ''The Lash of Destiny'' (1916). In 1926, she played the role of the mother in ''The Lullaby'', performed at the Pasadena Playhouse. ''The Abysmal Brute'' is a 1923 American silent sports drama film directed by Hobart Henley and starring Reginald Denny, Mabel Julienne Scott, and Charles K. French. It is an adaptation of the 1911 novel '' The Abysmal Brute'' by Jack London. The film received mixed reception, with one reviewer stating that the film was not a perfect adaptation of the novel. Comedic scenes, that were not in the novel, were added to the film by leading actor Reginald Denny. Plot A boxer raised in the mountains by his father comes to San Francisco and enjoys great success, but his lack of social skills means he struggles to romance the socialite with whom he has fallen in love.
