It was originally described as a subfamily of Branchipodidae by Alpheus Spring Packard in 1883, and elevated to the rank of family Family (from la, familia) is a group of people related either by consanguinity (by recognized birth) or affinity (by marriage or other relationship). Branchinella
''Branchinella'' is a genus of crustaceans in the family (biology), family Thamnocephalidae. This fairy shrimp genus is found across many parts of the world, but especially western Australia and southern Africa. Several species have small ranges and are threatened by habitat destruction. For example, ''Branchinella latzi, B. latzi'' is only known from south Northern Territory and southwest Queensland, but it has been Local extinction, extirpated from the Uluru region due to water pollution, pollution from urine and faeces of tourists. Selected species ''Branchinella'' includes the following species: * ''Branchinella acacioidea'' Belk & Sissom, 1992 * ''Branchinella affinis'' Linder, 1941 * ''Branchinella alachua'' Dexter, 1953 * ''Branchinella apophysata'' Linder, 1941 * ''Branchinella arborea'' Geddes, 1981 * ''Branchinella australiensis'' (Richters, 1876) * ''Branchinella basispina'' Geddes, 1981 * ''Branchinella buchananensis'' Geddes, 1981 * ''Branchinella chudeaui'' (Dada ... Anostraca
Anostraca is one of the four orders of crustaceans in the class Branchiopoda; its members are referred to as fairy shrimp. They live in vernal pools and hypersaline lakes across the world, and they have even been found in deserts, ice-covered mountain lakes and Antarctic ice. They are usually long (exceptionally up to ). Most species have 20 body segments, bearing 11 pairs of leaf-like ''phyllopodia'' (swimming legs), and the body lacks a carapace. They swim "upside-down" and feed by filtering organic particles from the water or by scraping algae from surfaces. They are an important food for many birds and fish, and some are cultured and harvested for use as fish food. There are 300 species spread across 8 families. Description The body of a fairy shrimp is elongated and divided into segments. The whole animal is typically long, but one species, '' Branchinecta gigas'' does not reach sexual maturity until it reaches long, and can grow to long. The exoskeleton is thin and ... Alpheus Spring Packard
Alpheus Spring Packard Jr. LL.D. (February 19, 1839 – February 14, 1905) was an American entomologist and palaeontologist. He described over 500 new animal species – especially butterflies and moths – and was one of the founders of ''The American Naturalist''.Cockerell (1920) Early life He was the son of Alpheus Spring Packard Sr. (1798–1884) and the brother of William Alfred Packard. He was born in Brunswick, Maine, and was Professor of Zoology and Geology at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, from 1878 until his death. He was a vocal proponent of Neo-Lamarckism during the eclipse of Darwinism.Sorenson (1995) Career & Works His chief work was the classification and anatomy of arthropods, and contributions to economic entomology, zoogeography, and the phylogeny and metamorphoses of insects. Packard was appointed to the United States Entomological Commission in 1877 where he served with Charles Valentine Riley and Cyrus Thomas.Mallis (1971) He wrote school text ... Zootaxa
''Zootaxa'' is a peer-reviewed scientific mega journal for animal taxonomists. It is published by Magnolia Press (Auckland, New Zealand). The journal was established by Zhi-Qiang Zhang in 2001 and new issues are published multiple times a week. From 2001 to 2020, more than 60,000 new species have been described in the journal accounting for around 25% of all new taxa indexed in The Zoological Record in the last few years. Print and online versions are available. Temporary suspension from JCR The journal exhibited high levels of self-citation and its journal impact factor of 2019 was suspended from ''Journal Citation Reports'' in 2020, a sanction which hit 34 journals in total. Biologist Ross Mounce noted that high levels of self-citation may be inevitable for a journal which publishes a large share of new species classification. Later that year this decision was reversed and it was admitted that levels of self-citation are appropriate considering the large proportion of papers f ...
