John Alexander Thain (born May 26, 1955) is an American businessman, investment banker, and former chair and CEO of the CIT Group. Thain was the last chairman and chief executive officer of Merrill Lynch before its merger with Bank of America. He was designated to become president of global banking, securities, and wealth management at the newly combined company, but resigned on January 22, 2009. Ken Lewis, CEO of Bank of America, reportedly forced Thain to step down after several controversies, such as the losses at Merrill Lynch which proved to be far larger than previously estimated, and the award of huge executive bonuses. Caryl Thain (11 April 1895 – 24 September 1969) was an English cricketer. Thain was a right-handed batsman who bowled right-arm fast-medium. He was born at Catherington, Hampshire. Thain made his first-class debut for Surrey against Glamorgan in the 1923 County Championship at Cardiff Arms Park. Glamorgan batted first, making 168 all out, with Thain bowling thirteen wicketless overs during their first-innings. Responding in their first-innings, Surrey made 158 all out, with Thain being dismissed for a duck by Frank Ryan. Glamorgan were dismissed for just 35 in their second-innings, with Surrey winning the match by ten wickets. He made a second first-class appearance for the county in that same season, against Scotland at Hamilton Crescent, Glasgow. Gary Thain
Gary Mervin Thain (May 15, 1948 – December 8, 1975) was a New Zealand bassist, best known for his work with British rock band Uriah Heep. Biography Thain was born in Christchurch. He had two older brothers, Colin and Arthur. He recorded in Christchurch in the band "The Strangers" (not to be confused with the Australian band of the same name). He moved to Australia at the age of 17. It was there he became a member of the band "The Secrets", which eventually dissolved in 1966. Later, Thain was part of the rock trio The New Nadir, and with the drummer Peter Dawkins, he traveled from New Zealand to London, and once jammed with Jimi Hendrix before the trio split in 1969. Thain joined the Keef Hartley Band, performing at Woodstock in 1969 and, in 1971, they toured with Uriah Heep; Uriah Heep asked him to join the band (replacing Mark Clarke) in February 1972. James Thain
James Thain (8 February 1921 – 6 August 1975) was a British aviator and former Royal Air Force officer. He was command pilot aboard BEA Flight 609 when it crashed in the 1958 Munich air disaster. Military career Thain started his career as a Royal Air Force sergeant. He was later promoted to warrant officer and was given an emergency commission as an acting pilot officer in April 1944. He was promoted to pilot officer on probation in September that year. He was subsequently made flight lieutenant in May 1948, receiving a permanent commission in that rank in 1952. He retired from the RAF to join British European Airways (BEA). Kevin Thain (born 1969) is a Scottish shinty player from the village of Tomatin. He has played almost his whole career for Kingussie Camanachd and has been an integral part of its success since the mid-1980s. Colin Thain (born 20 January 1959) is professor of political science and a former head of the Department of Political Science and International Studies at the University of Birmingham. Born in Bedlington, Northumberland, Thain received a BA in economics (1981) and Ph.D. in government (1985) from the University of Manchester. He was previously based at the University of Ulster. Thain is currently also a visiting fellow at All Souls College and senior visiting research fellow in the Department of Politics and International Relations at the University of Oxford.
