Thae Hyong-chol
Thae Hyong-chol (, born 1953) is a politician and university professor of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. He was President of the and an alternate for the 8th Political Bureau (and 7th Politburo member). Since the 12th convocation of the Supreme People's Assembly he is serving as Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee. He previously served as President of Kim Il-sung University from 2013 to 2019, and was the Minister of Higher Education in the Cabinet of North Korea. He is the son of a North Korean general, Thae Byong-ryol. Biography Born in 1953 in Pyongyang to Thae Byong-ryol, he graduated from Kim Il-sung University. He started as a researcher at the Institute of Social Sciences in 1977 and was head of the World Economic and South-South Cooperation Research Institute at the Academy of Social Sciences in October 1990 and served as vice president of the Institute of Social Sciences in March 1995. Supreme People's Assembly
The Supreme People's Assembly (SPA; ) is the unicameral legislature of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), commonly known as North Korea. It consists of one deputy from each of the DPRK's 687 constituencies, elected to five-year terms. The constitution identifies the SPA as the "highest organ of state power" and all state positions, including the President of the State Affairs and the Premier of the Cabinet, trace their authority to it. The Assembly typically does not legislate directly, but delegates that task to a smaller Standing Committee. The policies legislated by the SPA are carried out by government officials subject to oversight and correction by the Workers' Party of Korea. 2003 North Korean Parliamentary Election
Parliamentary elections were held in North Korea on 3 August 2003. Representatives were elected for five-year terms to all 687 seats of the Supreme People's Assembly, and also to 26,650 positions in city, county, and provincial People's Assemblies. All candidates were members of the three parties constituting the Democratic Front for the Reunification of the Fatherland. Most polling booths featured posters saying: "Let's participate in the voting for deputies to the People's Assembly and give our support to them!". There was a 99.9% turnout for the election with each candidate receiving 100% of the vote unopposed. In its first session, on 3 September, the newly elected parliament re-elected Kim Jong-il as the Chairman of the National Defence Commission.
