Thady Coughlan (born 3 March 1951) is a former Limerick City Councillor and former Mayor of Limerick. He is the son of former Mayor Stephen Coughlan. He is the youngest person to become Mayor of Limerick since the ousting of the "corrupt Corporation" in 1842. Early life Thady Coughlan was born in Limerick on 3 March 1951 into a political family. His father, Stephen Coughlan, was Mayor of Limerick from 1951–1952 and again from 1969 to 1970. He grew up on Barrington Street in Limerick city before his family moved to Wellington Place, off O'Connell Avenue. He received his primary education at St Philomena's National School before attending secondary school at St Munchin's College. One of his classmates in secondary school was Paddy Madden who would become Mayor of Limerick in 1988. Limerick City Council ( ga, Comhairle Cathrach Luimnigh) was the authority responsible for local government in the city of Limerick in Ireland. The council had 17 elected members. The head of the council had the title of Mayor. Limerick City Council was the smallest local council in Ireland by area (20.35 km2) and 30th (out of 34 authorities) in terms of population. It was abolished in 2014 when the Local Government Reform Act 2014 was implemented. It was succeeded by Limerick City and County Council. History The council was formerly known as Limerick Corporation after the City of Limerick received its Charter of Incorporation from King John I of England in 1197. The first Mayor of Limerick was Adam Sarvant. Between 1197 and 1651, Limerick City Council was dominated by English settlers.
