Texas State Highway Spur 247
Spur 247 is a state highway spur in the community of Pyote in Ward County, Texas. Route description Spur 247 begins in Pyote at Spur 57, the former route of US 80 in the region. It travels northward along Pyote Street, crossing RM 2355 before leaving the town. It then curves to the northeast to reach its northern terminus at SH 115. History A previous route numbered Spur 247 was designated in San Antonio, Bexar County on November 19, 1951 from then- US 81 via South Alamo Street, Probandt Street, and Steves Avenue to then- US 181 on South Presa Street. This route was cancelled on March 18, 1960 as a majority of it was concurrent with US 87 and other routes. Later that year, the current Spur 247 was designated on July 25, 1960 over the former route of SH 115 through Pyote, which was rerouted to the east to eventually connect with the newly constructed I-20. Pyote ( ) is a town in Ward County, Texas, United States. Its population was 114 at the 2010 census. History Pyote began as a small town. Its fortunes rose with oil, but its population decreased when the railroad was built away from the town. At one time, Pyote had 3,500 residents. Ward County, Texas
Ward County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, its population was 11,644. The county seat is Monahans. The county was created in 1887 and organized in 1892. It is named for Thomas W. Ward, a soldier in the Texas Revolution. History Native Americans Archeological investigations conducted in northwestern Ward County have found evidence of prehistoric man in the form of occupational debris, petroglyphs, and pictographs. Tribes occupying the area include Suma-Jumano, Apache, and Comanche. The sand hills have contained native artifacts. Texas State Highway Spur 57
Spur 57 is a state highway spur in Ward County, Texas. It is the former route of US 80 between Pyote and Monahans. Route description The Spur 57 designation begins along the two-way westbound frontage road of I-20 west of the Pyote city limit. The route follows the roadway of former US 80 and parallels the Union Pacific Railroad to its north. Traveling eastward through Pyote, Spur 57 crosses SH 115, which provides access to I-20 at its exit 66, and passes through Wickett, where it intersects FM 1219. The Spur 57 designation ends as it enters the county seat of Monahans; the roadway transitions into Business I-20 and continues into Monahans. A connection is also provided to I-20 via its exit 76.
