Texas State Highway 51 (SH 51) is a short state highway located entirely in Hansford County, Texas, just south of Spearman. Route description SH 51 begins at SH 207 southeast of Spearman and travels east through unincorporated Hansford County approximately . It is a two-lane route for its entire length, and has no intersections with other state-maintained routes until its terminus at FM 281, which continues to the east and south, and FM 760, which travels north to Spearman. History The original SH 51 was designated on August 21, 1923, as a route from Sagerton to Crowell, replacing a portion of SH 28. On June 15, 1926, it extended north to the Oklahoma state line. State Highway 349 (SH 349) is a state highway in the western part of Texas, United States. History The original formation of the highway on August 3, 1943 included only the section from Rankin to Midland, replacing FM 9. On April 30, 1947, FM 306 and FM 177 were redesignated to form the segment of SH 349 from Midland to near Lamesa. The section from Sheffield to Rankin was added on October 24, 1956 by redesignating part of SH 51. The part of SH 349 south of Sheffield was Farm to Market Road 1217, which was designated on July 14, 1949 from Dryden northward . FM 1217 was extended to the northeast on May 23, 1951, on December 18, 1951, on December 17, 1952, and on April 24, 1954. Levelland is a city in Hockley County, Texas, in the United States. As of the 2020 census, the city population was 12,652, down from 13,542 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hockley County. It is located on the Llano Estacado, west of Lubbock. Major industries include cotton farming and petroleum production. Channing is a city in Hartley County, Texas, in the United States. It is the county seat of Hartley County. As of the 2020 United States census, the city's population was 281. History Channing was founded in 1888 by George Channing Rivers, a paymaster for the Fort Worth and Denver City Railway. The settlement was originally called Rivers. Since the name Rivers duplicated another community in Texas, the name was changed to Channing later that year. Channing developed directly from its association with the XIT Ranch, a property that once included land in as many as 10 counties in the Texas Panhandle. In 1891, Willis D. McCamey is a city in Upton County, Texas. Its population was 1,887 at the 2010 census. The Texas legislature has declared McCamey "the Wind Energy Capital of Texas" because of the many wind farms that have been built in the area.
