Texas State Highway 279
State Highway 279 (SH 279) is a Texas state highway that runs from Cross Plains south to Brownwood. The route was designated on October 25, 1938 from Brownwood north to the Lake Brownwood State Park, and was extended north to Cross Plains on August 23, 1945. On September 26, 1945, the section of SH 279 in Lake Brownwood state park was cancelled, and SH 279 was rerouted more directly from Brownwood to Cross Plains, replacing FM 602. Brownwood is a city in and the county seat of Brown County, Texas, United States. The population was 18,862 at th2020 census Brownwood is located in the Northern Texas Hill Country and is home to Howard Payne University that was founded in 1889. History The original site of the Brown County seat of Brownwood was east of Pecan Bayou. A dispute arose over land and water rights, and the settlers were forced to find a new location. Greenleaf Fisk donated to relocate the county seat to the west side of the bayou, on what is now the current site of Brownwood, and 100 additional acres for county use. The town was incorporated in 1884. During the Second World War, Brownwood was the location of U.S. Army Camp Bowie, which had a peak complement of over 80,000 soldiers. Camp Bowie serves as a training camp today at the intersection Farm-to-Market Roads 45 and 2126. Lake Brownwood State Park
Lake Brownwood State Park is a state park located on the shore of Lake Brownwood in Brown County, Texas, United States and is administered by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. The 537.5 acre park was acquired by deed from the Brown County Water Improvement District No. 1 in 1933. The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) developed the park between 1934 and 1942. The park opened in 1938. History The citizens of Brown County voted in 1926 to organize the Brown County Water Improvement District for the purpose of creating a reservoir to control flooding along Pecan Bayou. The dam was completed in 1932 and the reservoir filled the same year. In 1933, the Texas State Parks Board acquired the deed for the land for the state park from the water improvement district.
