Texas State Highway 172
State Highway 172 (SH 172) is a state highway in Texas that connects Ganado to Olivia on the Gulf Coast. Route description State maintenance and the SH 172 designation begin along the shore of Keller Bay in the Calhoun County community of Olivia. The route travels northward along the peninsula and into Jackson County, where it intersects SH 35 in the hamlet of Weedhaven. SH 172 continues to the north and has a brief concurrency FM 616 in La Ward before turning slightly to the northwest. It has a junction with SH 111 before entering Ganado along 3rd Street. The SH 172 designation ends at Loop 522, the former route of US 59 through the city; 3rd Street continues northward as FM 710. State Highway 111 (SH 111) is a state highway that runs from Gonzales to Midfield in the southeastern region of the U.S. state of Texas. Route description SH 111 begins at a junction with U.S. Route 183 in the unincorporated community of Hochheim. La Ward, Texas
La Ward is a city in Jackson County, Texas, United States. The population was 213 at the 2010 census. Geography La Ward is located at (28.845036, –96.465659), at the junction of State Highway 172 and FM 616 in southern Jackson County, south of Ganado and southeast of Edna, the county seat. The nearest large city is Victoria, west of La Ward. The U.S. Census Bureau lists the total city area at , all of it land. History The community emerged on the coastal prairie in 1904 with the arrival of the St. Louis, Brownsville and Mexico Railway. It was named for Lafayette Ward, a local person who became a leader in introducing Hereford, Brahman, and Jersey cattle to Texas. By 1914, La Ward had developed into a cattle and shipping center. Lavaca Bay
Lavaca Bay () is a northwestern extension of the Matagorda Bay system found mostly in Calhoun County, Texas, United States. The ports of Port Lavaca and Point Comfort have been established on the bay, and are the main areas of human habitation. Linnville was located on the bay until its abandonment after the Great Raid of 1840, and the major port of Indianola was found near the confluence with the main Matagorda Bay, until the town's final destruction following the massive hurricane of 1886.
