Texas State Highway 149
State Highway 149 (SH 149) is a state highway that runs from Carthage to Longview in east Texas. History SH 149 was originally designated on March 19, 1930 along its current route, replacing SH 26A. On August 4, 1932, SH 149 was extended north to Daingerfield. On June 25, 1935, everything north of Longview was cancelled (this section north of Longview was intended to be cancelled on August 15, 1933), but was restored on June 16, 1936. The northern extension was transferred to SH 26 on September 26, 1939. On October 28, 1987, a loop around Carthage was completed, with SH 149 being routed around the western side of town along Loop 436. The old routing that entered Carthage was re-designated Spur 572. Loop 436 was cancelled on September 25, 1989 to remove concurrent mileage with SH 149. Carthage, Texas
Carthage is a city and the county seat of Panola County, Texas, United States. This city is situated in deep East Texas, 20 miles west of the Louisiana state line. Its population was 6,569 at the 2020 census. History Carthage was founded in 1847, two years after Texas was admitted to the United States. During the Civil War, men from Carthage and Panola County served as Confederate soldiers. African-American resident Milton M. Holland, formerly enslaved, served as a Union sergeant and earned a Medal of Honor. East Texas Regional Airport is an airport located in Gregg County, Texas. The airport is just South of the city of Lakeport, and is south of Longview. Its IATA identifier GGG comes from its prior name, Gregg County Airport. The airport is used for general aviation and military training; it has scheduled flights to Dallas/Fort Worth on American Airlines/American Eagle. Texas State Highway 43
State Highway 43 (SH 43) is a Texas state highway that runs from Henderson to Atlanta. Previous routes SH 43 was originally proposed on April 23, 1919, to connect SH 42 15 miles north of Longview to Rusk via Henderson. That same day, an intercounty highway was designated from SH 43's north end to Naples. On April 19, 1920, SH 43 was extended north to the Oklahoma border via Daingerfield. On August 21, 1923, the route had been further changed. The section from Henderson to Longview was transferred to SH 26, the section from Daingerfield to Omaha was transferred to SH 11, and the section from Clarksville to Oklahoma was transferred to SH 66, and the section from Henderson to Rusk transferred to SH 43A. Beckville, Texas
Beckville is a city in Panola County, in the U.S. state of Texas. The population was 722 at the 2020 census. History Named after early settler Matthew W. Beck who arrived sometime around 1850. A local post office opened in 1857, and by 1885 the community had two churches, two steam gristmills, three general stores, a hotel, a blacksmith, and an estimated population of seventy-five. When the Texas, Sabine Valley and Northwestern Railway was built through the county in 1886, the townspeople demanded such high prices for their property that railroad officials bypassed it a mile to the north. Joe Biggs, who owned the land in that area, sold it to the railroad and laid out a new townsite. Within a short time most of the businesses were moved to the railroad and the old Beckville was completely deserted.
