Texas State Highway 147
State Highway 147 (SH 147) is a state highway that runs from Zavalla north near to Shelbyville in Deep East Texas. The route was designated on March 19, 1930 as a renumbering of SH 8B from San Augustine to Zavalla. On March 26, 1942, SH 147 was cancelled and redesignated as FM 10. On September 9, 1947, FM 10 was cancelled and redesignated as SH 147, its original designation. SH 147 was extended north along the old route of U.S. Highway 96 from San Augustine to southeast of Shelbyville on August 20, 1952. On July 31, 1984, SH 147 was rerouted to be concurrent with new SH 21 rather than old SH 21. Zavalla, Texas
Zavalla is a city in Angelina County, Texas, United States. The population was 603 at the 2020 census. The town is named for Lorenzo de Zavala, a Mexican rancher, politician, and signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence who served as the first Vice-President of the Republic of Texas. Its city limits stretch several miles south of town into a heavily wooded area. Demographics As of the 2020 United States census, there were 603 people, 257 households, and 191 families residing in the city. As of the census of 2000, there were 647 people, 268 households, and 176 families residing in the city. The population density was 306.6 people per square mile (118.4/km2). History The first European settlement in the area began in 1717 with the establishment of Mission Nuestra Señora de los Dolores de los Ais by Spanish missionaries. Shelbyville is an unincorporated community in Shelby County, Texas, United States. It is located seven miles southeast of Center on State Highway 87. Close to Toledo Bend reservoir. East Texas is a broadly defined cultural, geographic, and ecological region in the eastern part of the U.S. state of Texas that comprises most of 41 counties. Texas State Highway 8
State Highway 8 (SH 8) is a north–south state highway that runs from the Red River, the Texas-Arkansas boundary, north of New Boston to SH 155 at Linden. History SH 8 was one of the original twenty five state highways on June 21, 1917, proposed as an 'East Texas Highway.' In 1919 the routing follows the present day SH 8 from the Arkansas State Line to its terminus in Linden, then continued south on present day U.S. Highway 59 through Marshall, to Carthage. On U.S. Highway 96, SH 8 traveled through San Augustine, Jasper to its junction with SH 62, where it turned towards to its terminus in Port Arthur.
