State Highway 138 (SH 138) is a state highway that runs between U.S. Highway 183 and SH 195 across northern Williamson County, Texas. The highway was originally part of SH 195. When SH 195 was redirected north of Florence to Killeen over RM 440 on January 27, 1988, this portion was redesignated as SH 138. Route description SH 138 begins at an intersection with US 183 in rural Williamson County, near the Burnet County line. It two lanes wide and travels east with some curves passing through no incorporated municipalities. North of Florence, it intersects Business SH 195, the former alignment of SH 195. Briggs is an unincorporated community in eastern Burnet County, Texas, United States. It lies along U.S. Route 183 and FM 2657 northeast of Burnet. Its elevation is 1,102 feet (336 m), and it is located at (30.8896255, -97.9250199). Although Briggs is unincorporated, it has a post office, with the ZIP code of 78608; the ZCTA for ZIP Code 78608 had a population of 279 at the 2000 census. Founded as Springs, the community was soon renamed Gum Springs. The first settler in the area, a Missourian named W. T. Gann, arrived in the area in 1855, but the community was established along the Berry Creek in the last quarter of the nineteenth century. A post office was established under the name of Taylor's Gin (named for leading settler Stephen Taylor) on 27 March 1888; it did not assume its current name until 21 June 1898, when local doctor William Hazelwood was able to have the community renamed for his mother-in-law. Florence is a city in Williamson County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,171 at the 2020 census. Since 2000, the territorial limits of Florence has grown by 8%. Florence is located about north from Georgetown and north of Austin in northwestern Williamson County. Florence is part of the metropolitan area. History The site was settled in the early 1850s and briefly called Brooksville. By 1857 it was known as Florence, when its first post office was established. Florence, a significant cotton processing center, was the original destination of the Bartlett-Florence Railway, later the Bartlett Western Railroad, which ran from a connection at Bartlett, Texas with the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad to Florence. Burnet County ( ) is a county located on the Edwards Plateau in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, the population was 49,130. Its county seat is Burnet. The county was founded in 1852 and later organized in 1854. It is named for David Gouverneur Burnet, the first (provisional) president of the Republic of Texas. The ''Killeen Daily Herald'' is a daily newspaper in Killeen, Texas. The newspaper is owned by Frank Mayborn Enterprises, Inc. The newspaper has a daily circulation of about 14,000 readers and a Sunday circulation of about 17,000 readers. History The newspaper was established in June 1890 as the weekly ''Killeen Herald'', owned by W.E. Bennett. Bennett sold the newspaper in 1893, and ownership of the newspaper changed several times before Bennett repurchased it in 1903. After a failed transition to a daily, William H.
