Texas Park Road 27
Park Road 27 or PR 27 is a Texas park road that runs from Fannin, Texas, Fannin to the Fannin Battleground State Historic Site, which is the site of the Battle of Coleto. PR 27 was originally SH 162 and briefly Spur 91 before gaining its current designation in 1940. Route description PR 27 begins within Fannin Battleground State Historic Site, forming a loop around the park. After the loop, the park road heads west and intersects Farm to Market Road 2506 (FM 2506). At this point, PR 27 turns north on a two-lane undivided road, heading through open fields. The road heads into the community of Fannin, Texas, Fannin and passes homes. PR 27 reaches their northern terminus at an interchange with U.S. Route 59 in Texas, US 59, where the road continues north as Farm to Market Road 2987, FM 2987. Fannin Battleground State Historic Site
The Fannin Battleground State Historic Site commemorates the Battle of Coleto Creek, a battle of the Texas Revolution, fought on March 19 and 20, 1836 between Texian forces commanded by Col. James W. Fannin and the Mexican Army commanded by Mexican General Jose de Urrea. Eventually surrounded and outnumbered, Fannin surrendered to the Mexican Army. He and his troops were executed several days later at nearby Presidio La Bahia. Fannin Battleground State Historic Site is located east of Goliad in Goliad County, Texas. Fannin is an unincorporated community in eastern Goliad County, Texas, United States. Its elevation is 141 feet (43 m). It is part of the Victoria, Texas Metropolitan Statistical Area. Goliad County ( ) is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, the population is 7,012. Its county seat is Goliad. The county is named for Father Miguel Hidalgo; "Goliad" is an anagram , minus the silent H. The county was created in 1836 and organized the next year. Battle Of Coleto
The Battle of Coleto, also known as the Battle of Coleto Creek, the Battle of the Prairie, and the Batalla del Encinal del Perdido, was fought on March 19–20, 1836, during the Goliad campaign of the Texas Revolution. In February, General José de Urrea led a branch of the Mexican army up the Gulf Coast of Mexican Texas toward Goliad, where a large contingent of soldiers from the Texian Army was garrisoned under Colonel James W. Fannin. Simultaneously, Mexican president Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna led a larger force into the Texian interior, where on March 6 his troops won the Battle of the Alamo. After learning of the Alamo's defeat, Texian general Sam Houston ordered Fannin to retreat from Goliad and join the rest of the army in Victoria.
