Texas House, District 7
District 7 is a district in the Texas House of Representatives. It was created in the 3rd legislature (1849–1851). The district has been represented by Republican Jay Dean since January 10, 2017, upon his initial election to the Texas House. As a result of redistricting after the 2020 Federal census, from the 2022 elections the district encompasses all of Gregg, Harrison, and Marion Counties. Jay Dean (politician)
James Wallace "Jay" Dean (born March 5, 1953) is an American politician. A Republican, he has been the member of the Texas House of Representatives for District 7, which encompasses Gregg and Upshur counties in East Texas, since 2017. Early life and education Dean was born in Opelousas, Louisiana, and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Louisiana State University. Career Prior to his election to the legislature, Dean served seven years as a city councilman and then ten years as the mayor of Longview, Texas, ending his term on May 15, 2016. As mayor, Dean refused to sign a proclamation for LGBT pride. In 2014, the city of Longview broke a contract with musician Ted Nugent to perform at Longview's Fourth of July concert, with Dean stating that Nugent "didn't really fit what we're trying to put together, a family-oriented program." Gregg County is a county located in the eastern part of the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, its population was 124,239. Its county seat is Longview. The county is named after John Gregg, a Confederate general killed in action during the American Civil War. Harrison County, Texas
Harrison County is a county on the eastern border of the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 United States census, its population was 68,839. The county seat is Marshall. The county was created in 1839 and organized in 1842. It is named for Jonas Harrison, a lawyer and Texas revolutionary. Developed for cotton plantations by planters from the South, this county had the highest number of enslaved African Americans in Texas before the Civil War. They comprised 59% of the population. From 1870 to 1930, Blacks made up 60% of the county's population. Marion County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, its population was 9,725. Its county seat is Jefferson. Marion County is in East Texas and is named for Francis Marion, the Revolutionary War general from South Carolina who was nicknamed the "Swamp Fox".
