''Tetris'' () is a puzzle video game created in 1985 by Alexey Pajitnov, a Soviet software engineer. In ''Tetris'', falling tetromino shapes must be neatly sorted into a pile; once a horizontal line of the game board is filled in, it disappears, granting points and preventing the pile from overflowing. Over 200 versions of ''Tetris'' have been published by numerous companies on more than 65 platforms, often with altered game mechanics, some of which have become standard over time. To date, these versions of ''Tetris'' collectively serve as the second-best-selling video game series with over 520 million sales, mostly on mobile devices. Alexey Pajitnov
Alexey Leonidovich Pajitnov (born April 16, 1955) is a Russian-American computer engineer and video game designer. He is best known for creating, designing, and developing ''Tetris'' in 1985 while working at the Dorodnitsyn Computing Centre under the Academy of Sciences of the Soviet Union (now the Russian Academy of Sciences). After ''Tetris'' was released internationally in 1987, he released a sequel in 1989, entitled '' Welltris''. In 1991, he moved to the United States and later became a U.S. citizen. In 1996, Pajitnov founded The Tetris Company alongside Dutch video game designer Henk Rogers. Henk Rogers is a Dutch-born American video game designer and entrepreneur. He is known for producing Japan's first major turn-based role-playing video game '' The Black Onyx'', securing the rights to distribute the Russian puzzle video game ''Tetris'' on video game consoles where the game found popularity, and as the founder of Bullet-Proof Software (and later Blue Planet Software) and The Tetris Company, which licenses the ''Tetris'' trademark. World Video Game Hall Of Fame
The World Video Game Hall of Fame is an international hall of fame for video games. The hall's administration is overseen by The Strong's International Center for the History of Electronic Games, and is located at The Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester, New York, United States. The museum began the International Center for the History of Electronic Games in 2009, announced the formation of the hall of fame in February 2015, and opened it on June 4, 2015. The Tetris Company, Inc. (TTC) is the manager and licensor for the ''Tetris'' brand to third parties. It is an American company based in Nevada and owned by the ''Tetris'' creator Alexey Pajitnov and Henk Rogers. The company is the exclusive licensee of Tetris Holding LLC, the company that owns ''Tetris'' rights worldwide. History ''Tetris'' was created in 1985 by Pajitnov. It is a portable version of Alexey Pajitnov's original ''Tetris'' and it was bundled with the North American and European releases of the Game Boy itself. It is the first game to have been compatible with the Game Link Cable, a pack-in accessory that allows two Game Boy consoles to link for multiplayer purposes.
