''Tetranychus urticae'' (common names include red spider mite and two-spotted spider mite) is a species of plant-feeding mite generally considered to be a pest. It is the most widely known member of the family Tetranychidae or spider mites. Its genome was fully sequenced in 2011, and was the first genome sequence from any chelicerate. Distribution ''T. urticae'' was originally native only to Eurasia, but has acquired a cosmopolitan distribution. Description ''T. urticae'' is extremely small, barely visible with the naked eye as reddish or greenish spots on leaves and stems; the adult females measure about long. Léon Jean Marie Dufour
Léon Jean Marie (or Jean-Marie Léon) Dufour (10 April 1780, Saint-Sever – 18 April 1865) was a French medical doctor and naturalist. Between 1799 and 1806 he studied medicine in Paris then returned to Saint-Sever in the Landes. He participated as an army doctor in the Peninsular War and returned to his birthplace at the end of the war. In 1854, he was elected a foreign member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. Dufour’s gland, an abdominal gland found in the females of nearly all members of the suborder Apocrita, is named after him. During his life he published 232 articles on arthropods (twenty on spiders) and was the author of ''Recherches anatomiques sur les Carabiques et sur plusieurs autres Coléoptères'' (1824–1826, Paris). Spider mites are members of the Tetranychidae family, which includes about 1,200 species. They are part of the subclass Acari (mites). ''Tetranychus lintearius'' is a species of spider mite known as the gorse spider mite. It is used as an agent of biological pest control on common gorse, a noxious weed in some countries. The adult mite is half a millimeter long and bright red. It lives in colonies in a shelter of spun silk spanning many branch tips. Infested plants are easily identifiable by these cobweb-like sheets of silk, which can grow quite large. The female lays one to four eggs per day during her three- to four-week adult lifespan. The tiny nymph is small enough to disperse on the wind during its first stage. Those that stay behind populate the colony as it expands. This mite is native to Europe, where it does more damage to the plant than any other organism. The mite appears to be host-specific; it does not attack any other plants.
