Terwispel is a village in the municipality of Opsterland in the east of Friesland, the Netherlands. Its neighbouring villages are Tijnje (west), Nij Beets (north-west), Beetsterzwaag (north), Lippenhuizen (south-east), Gorredijk (South), Langezwaag (south-west) and Luxwoude (also south-west). Gorredijk
Gorredijk ( fry, De Gordyk) is the largest town in the municipality of Opsterland, in the Dutch province of Friesland. Gorredijk had a population of 7,360 in 2019. The hamlets of Easterein and Kortezwaag are also part of the town. The latter was an independent village until 1962. Gorredijk and Kortezwaag then formed a double village as Gorredijk-Kortezwaag, but after a few years it was decided to shorten this to Gorredijk, so the older Kortezwaag became a neighborhood of Gorredijk in 1969. History The runs through the center of Gorredijk. The town is a so-called ''vlecke'' that was created by peat extraction. In the past, Gorredijk was mainly the place where goods were imported, stored and traded. A great amount of peat passed through Gorredijk, especially from the area behind Tijnje. There was dire poverty in the region. Beetsterzwaag
Beetsterzwaag ( fry, Beetstersweach) is a village in the municipality of Opsterland in the east of Friesland in the Netherlands. It had a population of around 3,485 in January 2017. Beetsterzwaag is known for its estates and manor houses. History The village was first mentioned in 1315 as Suagh, and means "pasture with cattle belonging to ". Beetsterzwaag developed on a sandy ridge from Oud Beets. In 1684, the village already contained four manor houses, and in the 19th century was described as "a kilometre of noble houses surrounded by parks and forests". The Dutch Reformed church was built between 1803 and 1804 and was enlarged in the 20th century. Harinxma State was built in 1841 by ''grietman'' (mayor) van Harinxma thoe Slooten. It has a large park dating from 1845. It was modernised and extended in 1931. Lauswolt was bought in 1826 and turned into a manor house in 1868. A7 Motorway (Netherlands)
The A7 motorway is a motorway in the Netherlands connecting Zaandam, via the Afsluitdijk, Sneek and Groningen to the German border near Bad Nieuweschans. The entire road is part of the European route E22, with exception of the first kilometer, between the terminus in Zaandam and the interchange Zaandam. The total length is 236 km. Lippenhuizen ( fry, Lippenhuzen) is a village in the municipality of Opsterland in the east of Friesland, the Netherlands. It had a population of around 1,330 in January 2017. History The village was first mentioned in 1315 as Luppingahusum, and means houses of the Luppinga family. Lippenhuizen developed on a sandy ridge in a heath and moorland region. Tijnje
Tijnje ( fry, De Tynje) is a village in the municipality of Opsterland in the east of Friesland, the Netherlands. It had a population of around 1,510 in January 2017. There are two windmills in the village, Boezemmolen and De Deelen. The latter is a tjasker. History The village was first mentioned in 1718 as "Winie Tinie, Luxter Tinie", and means "willow braided fence". Tijnje developed around 1870 as a peat excavation village. Nij Beets
Nij Beets ( nl, Nieuw Beets) is a village in the municipality of Opsterland in the east of Friesland in the Netherlands. It had a population of around 1,705 in January 2017. History Nij Beets was founded in 1863 by peat workers. The peat workers came to Nij Beets around 1860 to excavate and make peat of the turf. The settlement was near to the old village Beets. The area was a major transit route to the former municipality Utingeradiel, de Zeveinsweg; north lay Ga Weg—now Prikkewei. In 1831 a new road, the Nije Leppedyk—later the Domela Nieuwenhuiswei—between Zeveinsweg and Gean Wei was constructed. The fields ranged from 1863 to kick off. Twenty years later the landscape appeared as alternating strips of wasteland, hayfields and peat bog.
