Victoria River was an electoral divisions of the Northern Territory, electoral division of the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly, Legislative Assembly in Australia's Northern Territory. One of the Legislative Assembly's original electorates, it was first contested at the 1974 election, and was named after the Victoria River (Northern Territory), Victoria River. It was abolished in 2001 after a redistribution removed much of the Victoria River area from the seat, and was largely replaced with the new electorate of Electoral division of Daly, Daly. Electoral Division Of Goyder
Goyder is an electoral division of the Legislative Assembly in Australia's Northern Territory. It was first created in 1990, and is named after George Goyder, the South Australian surveyor responsible for carrying out the first freehold surveys in the area. Goyder encompasses large rural areas south of Darwin, covering 9,770 km², and taking in the towns of Bees Creek, Cox Peninsula, Virginia, Marlows Lagoon and parts of Berry Springs and Humpty Doo. When first created, it was even larger extending south to Pine Creek and east to Jabiru and the whole of Kakadu National Park. There were 5,583 people enrolled in the electorate as of August 2020. Goyder was considered a staunch conservative electorate and a very safe seat for the Country Liberal Party for most of its history. Country Liberal Party
The Country Liberal Party of the Northern Territory (CLP) is a centre-right political party in Australia's Northern Territory. In local politics it operates in a two-party system with the Australian Labor Party (ALP). It also contests federal elections as an affiliate of the Liberal Party of Australia and National Party of Australia, the two partners in the federal coalition. The CLP originated in 1971 as a division of the Australian Country Party (later renamed the National Party), the first local branches of which were formed in 1966. It adopted its current name in 1974 to attract Liberal Party supporters, but maintained a sole affiliation with the Country Party until 1979 when it adopted its current joint association. Northern Territory Legislative Assembly
The Legislative Assembly of the Northern Territory is the unicameral legislature of the Northern Territory of Australia. The Legislative Assembly has 25 members, each elected in single-member electorates for four-year terms. The voting method for the Assembly is the full-preferential voting system, having previously been optional preferential voting. Elections are on the fourth Saturday in August of the fourth year after the previous election, but can be earlier in the event of a no confidence vote in the Government. The most recent election for the Legislative Assembly was the 2020 election held on 22 August 2020. The next election is scheduled for 24 August 2024. Persons who are qualified under the ''Commonwealth Electoral Act 1918'' to vote for a member for the Northern Territory in the House of Representatives are qualified to vote at an election for the Legislative Assembly. John Kevin Raphael "Jack" Doolan (14 June 1927 – 29 January 1995) was an Australian politician. He was the Labor member for Victoria River in the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly from 1977 to 1983. He is best known for having toppled Majority Leader Goff Letts in the 1977 election—one of the few times that a major-party leader in Australia has been defeated in his own electorate. Doolan was re-elected in 1980, but had been removed from the Labor caucus by the 1983 election and recontested and lost as an Independent Labor candidate. Peter Maley
Peter John Maley (born 2 August 1969) is a controversial former Australian politician, barrister, solicitor and magistrate. He was the member for Goyder in the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly from 2001 to 2005, primarily as a member of the Country Liberal Party, but also for a short period as an independent member. Maley studied law at the University College of the Northern Territory obtaining a bachelor of laws with honours from the University of Queensland, worked at Philip and Mitaros, then became a police prosecutor, later lecturing in law part-time at the Northern Territory University. He went into private practice with the firm Withnall, Maley & Co. He was elected to parliament in 2001 and served on the CLP front-bench.
