Terry And The Pirates (serial)
''Terry and the Pirates'' (1940) is the 10th Serial film, film serial released by Columbia Pictures, Columbia. It is based on the comic strip ''Terry and the Pirates (comic strip), Terry and the Pirates'' created by Milton Caniff. In his biography, ''Meanwhile...'', Caniff stated that he hated the serial for changing so much of his comic strip, and that "I saw the first chapter and walked out screaming". Plot Young explorer Terry Lee and his grown-up sidekick, Pat Ryan, arrive in the Asian jungles in search of Terry's father, Dr. Herbert Lee. The elder Lee is an archaeologist, and the leader of a scientific expedition seeking evidence of a lost civilization. Soon, Terry discovers that his father has been kidnapped by an armed pirate gang known as the Leopard Men. Sheila Darcy (born Rebecca Benedict Heffener August 8, 1914 – February 24, 2004), also known as "Rebecca Wassem", was an American film actress of the 1930s and the 1940s. Biography Born Rebecca Benedict Heffener in York, Pennsylvania, Darcy moved to Hollywood when she was 18 to pursue a career in acting. She began her career using the name Rebecca Wassem and received her first role, uncredited, in the 1932 film ''Jewel Robbery''. Two years later she received more roles, starring in two films that year. By 1935 her career had taken off, and from then until 1941 she had roles in 41 films. In most of her early films, she played the heroine in B-movies, often Westerns. Darcy's best known roles were as the female lead in cliffhangers, such as the 1939 film ''Zorro's Fighting Legion'', in which she performed opposite Reed Hadley. ''The Shadow'' (1940) was the ninth serial released by Columbia Pictures. It was based upon the classic radio series and pulp magazine superhero character of the same name. Plot The Shadow battles a villain known as The Black Tiger, who has the power to make himself invisible and is attempting domination of major financial and business concerns. Victor Jory's Shadow is faithful to the radio character, especially the radio show's signature: the sinister chuckle of the invisible Shadow as he confronts the villain or his henchmen. Columbia, however, relied on fistfights, chases, and headlong action in its serials, and disliked the prospect of a 15-chapter adventure where the audience would not see much of the heroics, because the leading character was supposed to be invisible. This is a list of film serials by studio, separated into those released by each of the five major studios, and the remaining minor studios. The five major studios produced the greater number of serials. Of these the main studios are considered to be Columbia Pictures, Universal Pictures, and Republic Pictures. All three were active during the 1930s and 1940s. The other two major studios are Mascot Pictures, which later merged into Republic, and Pathé Exchange, which ceased serial production before the advent of sound.
