Terrestrial Tones are Dave Portner (Avey Tare) of Animal Collective and Eric Copeland of Black Dice. The two were roommates who began recording together when both of their respective primary bands went on temporary hiatus in November 2004. Noise Rock
Noise rock (sometimes called noise punk) is a noise music, noise-oriented style of experimental rock that spun off from punk rock in the 1980s. Drawing on movements such as minimal music, minimalism, industrial music, and New York hardcore, artists indulge in extreme levels of distortion through the use of electric guitars and, less frequently, electronic instrumentation, either to provide percussive sounds or to contribute to the overall arrangement. Some groups are tied to song structures, such as Sonic Youth. Paw Tracks
Paw Tracks (formerly known as Soccer Stars until 2000, then Animal until 2003) was an independent record label based in Washington, D.C. At first only records by Animal Collective were released on the label, but since 2004 it has also released records by other artists; the first was ''The Doldrums'' by Ariel Pink in October 2004. Although originally exclusively run by the members of Animal Collective, Paw Tracks is now co-owned by members of Carpark Records. A number of the artists on Paw Tracks were chosen by Animal Collective to perform at the All Tomorrow's Parties Festival 2011. Animal Collective is an American experimental pop band formed in Baltimore, Maryland. Black Dice is an American experimental noise music band based in Brooklyn, New York and consisting of brothers Bjorn and Eric Copeland along with Aaron Warren. Formed in 1997, the group was initially inspired by hardcore and noise rock, but subsequently shifted toward the extensive use of signal processing, effects units, and electronic instrumentation. Avey Tare
David Michael Portner (born April 24, 1979), also known by his moniker Avey Tare, is a musician and songwriter who co-founded the American experimental pop band Animal Collective. He has released three solo albums, as well as three collaborative albums with Panda Bear (Noah Lennox) which were later retroactively classified under Animal Collective's discography. Animal Collective Portner met Animal Collective's Deakin (Josh Dibb), Panda Bear (Noah Lennox), and Geologist (Brian Weitz) in high school. For years, the four of them swapped homemade recordings, shared musical ideas and performed in different group configurations. Portner recorded the ''Spirit They're Gone, Spirit They've Vanished'' album with Lennox, and initially released the recording on the band's own Animal label in 1999. Eric Copeland
Eric Copeland (born 1978 in Brunswick, Maine, United States) is an American experimental musician based in New York City. He is a core member of Black Dice and forms half of the duo Terrestrial Tones with Animal Collective's Avey Tare. Copeland uses a variety of instruments and effects but largely focuses his work on vocal sounds, primitive sampling and looping techniques, and delay manipulation. Copeland released his first solo effort, ''Hermaphrodite'', in 2007 on the Paw Tracks label. His next LP, ''Alien in a Garbage Dump'', released in August 2009, is composed of songs from his EPs ''Alien in a Garbage Dump'' and ''Al Anon''. In 2009, Copeland self-released the CD-R ''Rgag'' EP. Noah Benjamin Lennox (born July 17, 1978), also known by his moniker Panda Bear, is an American musician, singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and co-founding member of the band Animal Collective. In addition to his work with that group, Lennox has released six solo LPs since 1999, with his influential 2007 album '' Person Pitch'' inspiring numerous subsequent acts. His subsequent albums ''Tomboy'' (2011) and ''Panda Bear Meets the Grim Reaper'' (2015) both reached the ''Billboard'' 200. Lennox was primarily raised in Baltimore, Maryland, where he sang tenor in his high school chamber choir, and studied piano and cello.
