Fluvial Terrace
Fluvial terraces are elongated terraces that flank the sides of floodplains and fluvial valleys all over the world. They consist of a relatively level strip of land, called a "tread", separated from either an adjacent floodplain, other fluvial terraces, or uplands by distinctly steeper strips of land called "risers". These terraces lie parallel to and above the river channel and its floodplain. Because of the manner in which they form, fluvial terraces are underlain by fluvial sediments of highly variable thickness.Fairbridge, R. W., 1968, ''Encyclopedia of Geomorphology.'' Reinhold Book Company, New York.Blum, M., and T.E. Tonqvist, 2000, ''Fluvial responses to climate and sea-level change, a review and look forward.'' Sedimentology. v. 47 suppl. 1, pp. 2-48. River terraces are the remnants of earlier floodplains that existed at a time when either a stream or river was flowing at a higher elevation before its channel downcut to create a new floodplain at a lower elevation. East Terrace
__NOTOC__ East Terrace marks the eastern edge of the Adelaide city centre. It is one of the main north–south thoroughfares through the east side of the city. Although the terrace essentially runs north–south between North Terrace and South Terrace, unlike Adelaide's other three terraces, its path is far from a straight line; travelling the entire length of East Terrace requires turning at right angles at most intersections from Pirie Street onwards. These days however, the traffic flow, after a swerve to the east between Grenfell and Pirie Streets, continues southwards over the Pirie intersection into Hutt Street and on down to South Terrace. After crossing South Terrace, East Terrace continues through the parklands as Beaumont Road, but unlike other roads through the parklands it is not a thoroughfare; there is a break in the middle of it. The terrace marks the eastern edge of Colonel William Light's plan for the City of Adelaide. Between Grenfell Street and North Terra ...

The Terrace, 1909
''The Terrace, 1909'' is a landscape painting by Milly Childers showing the members' terrace of the Palace of Westminster with its view of the River Thames looking towards Lambeth Bridge. It is held by the Parliamentary Art Collection. Painted before women could be elected to the British House of Commons, or sit in the House of Lords, the people on the terrace are all men. Childer's father Hugh Culling Eardley Childers served as Chancellor of the Exchequer and Home Secretary, which may have assisted to secure her the commission for the painting. The bearded man with top hat in the central group is Sir John Benjamin Stone, who later took a photograph of Childers with her painting. He appears to be giving a photograph to Sir Henry David Erskine, the Serjeant-at-Arms who had been responsible for removing the suffragettes Helen Fox and Muriel Matters who had chained themselves to the grilles of the ladies gallery of the House of Commons on 28 October 1908.

Melodic Motion
Melodic motion is the quality of movement of a melody, including nearness or farness of successive pitches or notes in a melody. This may be described as conjunct or disjunct, stepwise, skipwise or no movement, respectively. See also contrapuntal motion. In a conjunct melodic motion, the melodic phrase moves in a stepwise fashion; that is the subsequent notes move up or down a semitone or tone, but no greater. In a disjunct melodic motion, the melodic phrase leaps upwards or downwards; this movement is greater than a whole tone. In popular Western music, a melodic leap of disjunct motion is often present in the chorus of a song, to distinguish it from the verses and captivate the audience. Bruno Nettl describes various types of melodic movement or contour (Nettl 1956, 51–53): *Ascending: Upwards melodic movement *Descending: Downwards melodic movement (prevalent in the New World and Australian music) *Undulating: Equal movement in both directions, using approximately the same ...

Terrace (board Game)
__NOTOC__ ''Terrace'' is a strategy game played by two, three, or four players on a multi-leveled 8×8 (or, more recently, 6×6) board. It is most widely known for also being a prop in the American television series '' Star Trek: The Next Generation''. There are also computer versions of the game. Rules The game board for ''Terrace'' has either 64 or 36 squares of uniform color, arranged in L-shaped levels ("terraces") that rise stepwise from the board's lowest points in two diagonally opposite corners to its highest points in the other two corners. All pieces are shaped alike and move according to the same rules, but they are of four different sizes and vary in capturing "power." One of each player's smallest pieces has the letter "T" carved into it and has a role somewhat similar to the king in chess. The object is to win either by moving your "T" piece from its starting point at one corner to an opposite corner, or by capturing your opponent's "T". Players can move any number ...
