Teresa Casuso Morín
Lorenza Teresa Inocencia Casuso y Morín (better known as "Teté" Casuso; 10 August 1912 – 28 July 1994) was a prominent Cuban intellectual, who fought for democracy and freedom in Cuba. As a writer, she worked in various genres, including novel, theater, chronicle, poetry, as well as radio and cinematographic libretos. Her journalistic work appeared in several publications in Cuba, Mexico and the US. She also worked as a translator and drama teacher; and was an actress of stage and screen. Along with several other middle-class, educated women writer contemporaries - Emilia Bernal, Lydia Cabrera, Ana Maria Simo, Hilda Perera Soto, and Rita Geada - Casuso left Cuba after the 1959 Revolution. Emilia Bernal Agüero ( Nuevitas, 8 May 1882 – 1964) was a Cuban poet, who also cultivated other genres such as essay, translation and the autobiographical novel. Along with several other middle-class, educated women writer contemporaries - Lydia Cabrera, Teresa Casuso Morín, Rita Geada, Ana Maria Simo, and Hilda Perera Soto- Bernal left Cuba after the 1959 Revolution. Cuban Dissidents
The Cuban dissident movement is a political movement in Cuba whose aim is to replace the current government with a liberal democracy. According to Human Rights Watch, the Cuban government represses nearly all forms of political dissent. Background 1959 Cuban Revolution Fidel Castro came to power with the Cuban Revolution of 1959. By the end of 1960, according to Paul H. Lewis in ''Authoritarian Regimes in Latin America'', all opposition newspaper had been closed down and all radio and television stations were in state control. Lewis states that moderate teachers and professors were purged, about 20,000 dissidents were held and tortured in prisons. Homosexuals as well as other "deviant" groups who were barred from military conscription, were forced to conduct their compulsory military service in camps called "Military Units to Aid Production" in the 1960s, and were subjected to political " reeducation".
