Teresa Calvesi
Vincenzo Calvesi ( fl. 1777–1811) was an Italian operatic tenor and impresario. A skillful lyric tenor, he began his career performing in opera houses in Italy during the 1770s. He was active in Dresden in 1782 to 1783 and then spent most of his time performing in Vienna from 1785 to 1794. He is best remembered today for creating the role of Ferrando in the world premiere of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's '' Così fan tutte'' in 1790. That same year the Viennese publication ''Grundsätze zur Theaterkritik'' described him as "one of the best tenors from Italy…with a voice naturally sweet, pleasant and sonorous." He was later active in Rome as an impresario up until 1811. Life and career Calvesi was born in Rome, the son of Bernhard Calvesi, a papal chamberlain. Michael Lorenz (musicologist)
Michael Lorenz (born 18 July 1958) is an Austrian musicologist, music teacher, musician, chess historian and photographer, noted as a Mozart scholar and for his archival work combining music history and genealogical research. Career Born in Vienna, Lorenz studied cello and oboe at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna where he obtained his diploma in 1990, and musicology at the University of Vienna with a PhD in 2001. From 2001 to 2005 he served as chair of the International Franz Schubert Institute. Lorenz has received grants from the Jubilee Foundation of Oesterreichische Nationalbank, the Austrian Science Fund and the ''Music & Letters'' Trust. After having worked with the Esterházy Foundation, he is currently doing research based on a grant from the Jubilee Foundation of city of Vienna. La Villanella Rapita
''La villanella rapita'' (''The Abducted Country Girl'') is an ''opera giocosa'' in two acts by Francesco Bianchi. The libretto was by Giovanni Bertati. Performance history The opera was first performed at the Teatro San Moisè in Venice in the autumn of 1783. It was then given at the Eszterháza Theater in Süttör on 29 August 1784. It was also produced at the Little Theatre in the Haymarket in London under on 27 February 1790. A pasticcio with the same title, with some music by Bianchi as well as Paisiello, Guglielmi, Giacomo Gotifredo Ferrari, Sarti and Soler was performed at Théâtre Feydeau in Paris on 5 June 1789. Mozart additions Mozart contributed a vocal quartet, "Dite almeno in che mancai?", K. 479, and a vocal terzet, "Mandina amabile", K. 480, for a performance at the Burgtheater in Vienna on 1785. Francesco Bianchi (composer)
Giuseppe Francesco Bianchi (1752 – 27 November 1810) was an Italian opera composer. Born in Cremona, Lombardy, he studied with Pasquale Cafaro and Niccolò Jommelli, and worked mainly in London, Paris and in all the major Italian operatic centers of Venice, Naples, Rome, Milan, Turin, Florence. He wrote at least 78 operas of all genres, mainly in the field of the Italian opera, but in the French opera too. These included the drammi per musica (opera seria) '' Castore e Polluce'' (Florence 1779), '' Arbace'' and '' Zemira'' (both Naples, 1781), '' Alonso e Cora'' (Venice, 1786), ''Calto'' and ''La morte di Cesare'' (both Venice, 1788), and '' Seleuco, re di Siria'' (Venice, 1791), and the opera giocosa '' La villanella rapita'' ( Süttör, 1784). Bianchi committed suicide in Hammersmith, London, in 1810, probably out of family troubles. ''L'arbore di Diana'' (''The Tree of Diana''), is an opera in two acts composed by Vicente Martín y Soler, with an original libretto by Lorenzo da Ponte. It premiered at the Burgtheater in Vienna on 1 October 1787. Background and performance history Da Ponte's librettos for ''L'arbore di Diana'' and '' Così fan tutte'' were the only ones of his not taken from an existing plot. The opera's premiere on 1 October 1787 marked a visit to Vienna of the niece of Holy Roman Emperor Joseph II, the Archduchess Maria Teresa, who was on her way to Dresden to marry Prince Anton Clemens of Saxony in person (they had been married by proxy in Florence the month before). Vicente Martín Y Soler
Anastasio Martín Ignacio Vicente Tadeo Francisco Pellegrin Martín y Soler (2 May 175430 January or 10 February 1806) was a Spanish composer of opera and ballet. Although relatively obscure now, in his own day he was compared favorably with his contemporary and admirer, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, as a composer of opera buffa. In his time he was called "Martini lo spagnuolo" ("Martini the Spaniard"); in modern times, he has been called "the Valencian Mozart". He was known primarily for his melodious Italian comic operas and his work with Lorenzo Da Ponte in the late 18th century, as well as the melody from ''Una cosa rara'' quoted in the dining scene of Mozart's ''Don Giovanni''. ''Gli equivoci'' (''The Misunderstandings''), is an Italian opera buffa by Stephen Storace to a libretto by Lorenzo Da Ponte, based on Shakespeare's ''The Comedy of Errors ''The Comedy of Errors'' is one of William Shakespeare's early plays. ''Axur, re d'Ormus'' ("Axur, king of Ormus") is an operatic dramma tragicomico in five acts by Antonio Salieri. The libretto was by Lorenzo Da Ponte. ''Axur'' is the Italian version of Salieri's 1787 French-language work ''Tarare'' which had a libretto by Beaumarchais. Synopsis Axur, King of the Persian Gulf kingdom of Ormus, orders one of his soldiers, Altamor, to abduct Aspasia, the wife of Atar, the heroic commander of Axur's army. Not knowing who kidnapped Aspasia but suspecting an overseas enemy, Atar speaks with the king and begs for justice. Moved by his appeal, Axur allows Atar to take a ship and seek his wife.
