Tenom Railway Station
Tenom railway station ( ms, Stesen Keretapi Tenom) is one of four main railway station on the Western Sabah Railway Line located in Tenom, Sabah, Malaysia. History Like most areas in the West Coast Division; the area around Tenom in the Interior Division is used by the North Borneo administration for agricultural purposes. To transport the produce to major towns, English engineer Arthur J. West import labourers from China to construct a railway line in 1903 in Tenom; which was later completed in 1905. The original station was built from wood and located in () before it was moved to the present site in 2007 with the construction of a new station following the modernisation of rail services in the modern state of Sabah. From 1970s, the line to Melalap that connecting to the station have been dismantled. The present station began its operation on 21 February 2011. Tenom ( ms, Pekan Tenom, ) is the capital of the Tenom District in the Interior Division of Sabah, Malaysia. Its population was estimated to be around 5,148 in 2010. It is located about 176 kilometres south of Kota Kinabalu and 128 kilometres north of Long Pasia, which is the one of the famous attraction in Sabah. In the early days of British colonial rule in Malaysia, the town was called Fort Birch. The town is considered the unofficial capital of the Murut community, whose most important festival, the annual Pesta Kalimaran (Kalimaran Festival), is held in the town. It is also the main gateway to other areas within the Murut heartland and the minority of Lundayeh. Tenom District
The Tenom District ( ms, Daerah Tenom) is an administrative district in the Malaysian state of Sabah, part of the Interior Division which includes the districts of Beaufort, Keningau, Kuala Penyu, Nabawan, Sipitang, Tambunan and Tenom. Beaufort Railway Station, Sabah
Beaufort railway station ( ms, Stesen Keretapi Beaufort) is one of four main railway stations on the Western Sabah Railway Line located in Beaufort, Sabah, Malaysia. History Railway construction in Beaufort started in 1896; the first construction of a minor station started at the Bakau River on the north east. Another minor station was built on the bank of the Padas River in south Beaufort on 1898. The main station in the town centre (which is the present station) was completed in 1903. Full operation service of the North Borneo Railway started on 1 August 1914. In 2007, the station was closed for renovation; the original wooden station building was demolished and replaced with a new concrete building. The present station began operation on 21 February 2011. Melalap Railway Station
Melalap railway station ( ms, Stesen Keretapi Melalap) is a former railway station on the Western Sabah Railway Line located in Melalap, Tenom, Sabah, Malaysia. History In 1900s, like most areas in the West Coast Division; vast area of Melalap was once planted with rubber trees. A railway extension line to Melalap was then constructed by English engineer Arthur J. West using labourers from China comprising mostly Hakka people. The line was completed in 1906 to transport the produce of North Borneo as well for people to travel to major towns. The line was opened along with other lines on 1 August 1914. Following the rail service termination due to economic changes in the areas around Melalap, the station was eventually abandoned and fully closed between 1970–1971. Arthur Joseph West
Arthur Joseph West (1863 in Bromsgrove; – 2 November 1937 in Bexhill-on-Sea) was a British civil engineer. Under his leadership, the Labuan Coal Line and the North Borneo Railway from Beaufort to Weston and Melalap were built. Personal life West was born in 1863 in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, England, the son of a farmer. Little is known about his youth and early professional career, but he was recorded in a census as a teacher at the age of 17. On the recommendation of his friend William Clark Cowie,K. G. Tregonning. p. 56. he was appointed as Chief Railway Engineer on 7 July 1896 by the North Borneo Chartered Company with an annual salary of 4,800 Straits dollars. North Borneo
North Borneo (usually known as British North Borneo, also known as the State of North Borneo) was a British Protectorate, British protectorate in the northern part of the island of Borneo, which is present day Sabah. The territory of North Borneo was originally established by concession (territory), concessions of the Sultanates of Bruneian Empire, Brunei and Sultanate of Sulu, Sulu in 1877 and 1878 to a German Empire, German-born representative of Austria-Hungary, a businessman and diplomat, Gustav Overbeck.
