It goes east as a primary highway to an intersection with SR 263 before passing by Cordell Hull Lake/Cumberland River. It then passes through Defeated and travels along Defeated Creek for a short distance before turning east again and passing through Kempville. SR 85 then enters Jackson County and passes by the historic home of Sampson Williams. It then climbs a few mountains before coming to a junction and becomes concurrent with SR 262 at a crossing of an arm of Cordell Hull Lake. It originates at Sparta on U.S. Route 70 (US 70), goes through the town of Monterey, and ends on the west side of Livingston along SR 85. State Route 136 (SR 136) is a state highway in the central portion of the U.S. state of Tennessee. It connects US 70S near Rock Island in Warren County with SR 52 in northern Overton County, traversing much of the northeastern Highland Rim. Hilham is an unincorporated community in Overton County, Tennessee. The community is situated around the junction of Tennessee State Route 136 (which runs north-to-south) and Tennessee State Route 85 (which runs east-to-west). Although not a census-designated place, Hilham is part of a Zip Code Tabulation Area (38568) that covers most of rural northwest Overton County and part of northeast Jackson County. State Route 262 (SR 262) is an east–west state highway in Middle Tennessee. it traverses Macon and Jackson counties. Route description SR 262 begins in Macon County as a secondary highway at an intersection with SR 52 just east of Lafayette. It turns southeastward towards Willette crossing SR 56 and SR 80. It runs concurrently with SR 56 from Gidds Crossroads to near Goose Horn.
