State Route 81 (SR 81) is a state highway in northeastern Tennessee. It travels in Unicoi and Washington counties. It connects Fall Branch with Erwin. Route description SR 81 beings in Unicoi County at an interchange with I-26/US 23/ US 19W (Exit 37) in Erwin (with the road continuing south as SR 107). It goes north from this interchange concurrent with SR 107. The two routes leave Erwin and continue north to parallel the Nolichucky River before crossing into Washington County. SR 81/SR 107 continue north to pass through Embreeville, where they cross over a bridge over the Nolichucky River, before entering the community of Lamar, where SR 107 turns west and SR 81 continues north. Erwin, Tennessee
Erwin is a town in and the county seat of Unicoi County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 6,097 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Johnson City Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is a component of the Johnson City– Kingsport–Bristol, TN- VA Flag Pond, Tennessee, Unicoi, Tennessee Combined Statistical Area – commonly known as the " Tri-Cities" region. History The town of Erwin received its name by a mail mishap. On December 5, 1879, the name of the town was Ervin, in honor of D.J.N. Ervin, who had donated of land for the county seat. A typo made by post office officials caused the name to be recorded as Erwin. The mistake was never corrected. Erwin earned some notoriety in 1916 when the only known public execution of an elephant in Tennessee occurred in the community. Embreeville, Tennessee
Embreeville is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in southern Washington County, Tennessee. It is located along the Nolichucky River and on State Routes 81 and 107. The population of the CDP was 429 at the 2020 census. Demographics History Embreeville was once a mining community. Lead was first mined, reportedly used in bullets fired at the British in 1780 in the Battle of Kings Mountain. In 1812, William Chester, the owner of the Chester Inn located in nearby Jonesborough, bought near the mouth of Bumpus Cove and built a crude beehive iron forge built with native rocks. Interstate 81 (I-81) is part of the Interstate Highway System that runs northward from Dandridge, Tennessee, to the Thousand Islands Bridge at the Canadian border near Fishers Landing, New York. In Tennessee, I-81 serves the northeastern part of the state, running from its southern terminus with I-40 in Dandridge to the Virginia state line in Bristol. The route serves the Tri-Cities region of the state and the eastern parts of the Knoxville metropolitan area, terminating about east of Knoxville. State Route 93 (SR 93) is a state highway in the eastern part of the U.S. state of Tennessee. Jonesborough (historically also Jonesboro) is a town in, and the county seat of, Washington County, Tennessee, in the Southeastern United States. Its population was 5,860 as of 2020. State Route 353 (SR 353) is a state highway in the northeastern portion of the U.S. state of Tennessee, in the area known as the Tri-Cities region. It connects the community of South Central with the town of Jonesborough. Route description SR 353 begins at an intersection with SR 107 in South Central as Bailey Bridge Road. Approximately from SR 107, the route crosses the Nolichucky River. It continues to the community of Washington College, where Bailey Bridge Road ends and SR 353 becomes Old State Route 34. Nolichucky River
The Nolichucky River is a river that flows through Western North Carolina and East Tennessee, in the southeastern United States. Traversing the Pisgah National Forest and the Cherokee National Forest in the Blue Ridge Mountains, the river's watershed is home to some of the highest mountains in the Appalachians, including Mount Mitchell in North Carolina, the highest point in the eastern United States.
