Tennessee Library Association
The Tennessee Library Association (TLA) is a professional organization that offers support for library staff working in Tennessee. It is headquartered in Memphis, Tennessee. TLA was originally organized in Nashville, Tennessee, Nashville on May 29, 1902, by members of the Nashville Public Library staff and the Nashville Library Club and had 41 members by 1905. G.H. Baskette, president of the Nashville Public Library, was the first president of TLA and served from 1902 to 1913. The first annual meeting of the association was in Nashville on January 18, 1905 and had an opening address by James_B._Frazier, Governor Frazier. TLA publishes a regular newsletter and a quarterly journal called ''Tennessee Libraries'' (ISSN:1935-7052). American Library Association
The American Library Association (ALA) is a nonprofit organization based in the United States that promotes libraries and library education internationally. It is the oldest and largest library association in the world, with 49,727 members as of 2021. History During the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia in 1876, 103 librarians, 90 men and 13 women, responded to a call for a "Convention of Librarians" to be held October 4–6 at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. At the end of the meeting, according to Ed Holley in his essay "ALA at 100", "the register was passed around for all to sign who wished to become charter members," making October 6, 1876, the date of the ALA’s founding. Nashville Public Library
Nashville Public Library is the public library serving Nashville, Tennessee and the metropolitan area of Davidson County. In 2010, the Nashville Public Library was the recipient of the National Medal for Museum and Library Service. The library was named the Gale/Library Journal 2017 Library of the Year. History A succession of public libraries, known by a variety of names, served the people of Nashville. The early libraries were generally small, offered a narrow range of services, and operated on a fee schedule.
