Tengatangi–Areora–Ngatiarua
Tengatangi–Areora–Ngatiarua is a Cook Islands electoral division returning one member to the Cook Islands Parliament. Its current representative is the Hon Te Hani Brown, who has held the seat since 2018. The electorate was created in 1981, when the Constitution Amendment (No. 9) Act 1980 adjusted electorate boundaries and split the multimember electorate of Atiu Ātiu, also known as ʻEnuamanu (meaning ''land of the birds''), is an island of the Cook Islands archipelago, lying in the central-southern Pacific Ocean. Norman George
Norman George (born 2 July 1946) is a Cook Islands politician and former Speaker of the Cook Islands Parliament, Deputy Prime Minister, and Cabinet Minister. George was first elected to the Parliament of the Cook Islands in 1983. He represented the electorate of Tengatangi–Areora–Ngatiarua for 21 years. Repeated conflicts over leadership and cabinet posts saw him quit, found, and rejoin parties, moving from the Cook Islands Democratic Party to the Alliance and back, then to the New Alliance Party before returning to the Democrats. After losing his seat in the 2004 election and serving as Speaker, he represented the seat of Teenui–Mapumai for eight years, initially as an independent, then as a member of the Cook Islands Party, then as an independent again. March 2019 Tengatangi-Areora-Ngatiarua By-election
A by-election was held in the Cook Islands constituency of Tengatangi-Areora-Ngatiarua on 18 March 2019. The by-election was called following the defection of sitting MP Te-Hani Brown from the Democratic Party (Cook Islands), Democratic Party in January in order to support the government of Henry Puna, which triggered a by-election under election law. Brown ran as an independent with the support of the Cook Islands Party against Nandi Glassie, whom Brown had beaten in the 2018 Cook Islands general election. Results Aftermath Although Brown retained her seat, Glassie filed a petition against her victory. He alleged that she had Electoral fraud, effectively bribed voters by covering the charge of a private aircraft to carry voters to vote on Atiu; Brown maintained that this did not constitute an offence. Brown resigned in April 2019 during the process of the petition through the courts and although Glassie was allowed to challenge the election result, this was reversed on appeal. B ...
