The bulletin was the first permanent 30-minute news broadcast in the United Kingdom, and although initially scheduled for only thirteen weeks due to fears that its length would turn viewers off,' the bulletin proved to be highly popular with audiences and became a fixture of the ITV schedule. ''News at Ten'' rose to popularity for its winning combination of in-depth, analytical news coverage and populist stories,' as well as for its use of Big Ben's chimes to separate news headlines in its opening sequence. It simultaneously helped popularise newscasters such as Alastair Burnet, Andrew Gardner, Reginald Bosanquet, Sandy Gall, Anna Ford, John Suchet, Mark Austin, Alastair Stewart and Trevor McDonald into well-known television personalities. The Ten O'Clock News (1976 TV Program)
''The Ten O'Clock News'' was a weeknight local television news show, broadcast from 1976 to 1991 by WGBH, the Boston PBS affiliate. It replaced a pair of earlier news programs: ''The Reporters'' (1970-1973) and ''Evening Compass'' (1973-1974). The show premiered on Thursday, January 15, 1976. Christopher Lydon became host of the program in 1977; his co-hosts included Gail Harris (1984-1987) and Carmen Fields (1987-1991). It won its first New England Emmy Award in 1978. Ultimately, the show and staff would win eight, including three for Best News Program. A Boston Globe 1991 editorial viewed the program as distinctive among television news broadcasts: "The show produces deeper reports on the joys and hardships of the city's poorer neighborhoods than customarily seen on the commercial channels." A Globe editorial on the occasion of the show's cancellation wrote, "No other channel has approached the oddities and village politics of this city -- its cultural, religious and intellect ...

It contains their best-known song, " Turning Japanese", which reached No. 3 in the UK chart in February 1980 and was also a worldwide success. A remix of "News at Ten" (named after the well-known ITV news programme), went to No. 44 in July of that year. A third single, a re-recording of "Waiting for the Weekend" that included a horn section, failed to chart. Song details "News at Ten", a cynical examination of the generation gap and the narrator's fear of ending up as complacent as the parent he despises for his conformism, was expected to be a hit on the back of the success of "Turning Japanese". Its poorer performance was blamed in part by the long-running strike at the BBC's ''Top of the Pops'', which meant it received very little media exposure.
