Temuco () is a List of cities in Chile, city and Communes of Chile, commune, capital (political), capital of the Cautín Province and of the Araucanía Region in southern Chile. The city is located south of Santiago de Chile, Santiago. The city grew out from a fort of the same name established in 1881 during Occupation of Araucanía, Chile's invasion of Araucanía. Temuco lies in the middle of the historic Araucanía (historic region), Araucanía, a traditional land of the indigenous Mapuche. Temuco's central place in Araucanía with easy access to the Andean valleys, lakes and coastal areas makes it a hub for tourism, agricultural, livestock and forestry operations as well as a communication and trade centre for the numerous small towns of Araucanía. Manuel Recabarren
Manuel Martín José Recabarren Rencoret (October 20, 1826 – June 5, 1901) was a Chilean political figure and liberal politician. He served several times as minister. He was born in Santiago, the son of Manuel Recabarren Aguirre and of Martina Rencoret Cienfuegos. After completing his studies at the Instituto Nacional, he graduated as a lawyer from the Universidad de Chile on May 9, 1865. Recabarren was named teacher of Political Economy at the Instituto Nacional in 1842 and he married Carolina del Solar Marín in 1859, but they were childless. He started his political career by joining the Liberal party and participating in the 1851 Revolution, during which he was captured and deported. He returned to Chile in 1862 and joined the staff of the ''La Voz de Chile'' (''Voice of Chile'') newspaper. On June 28, 1864 he was elected deputy for Illapel. ''Temu cruckshanksii'' (Mapudungun: ''temu'') is a species of plant in the family Myrtaceae. It is endemic to Chile. It is threatened by habitat loss. The purported variety "Heaven Scent" sold commercially is likely just the unimproved plant. Taxonomy The species was described as ''Temu cruckshanksii'' by Otto Karl Berg in 1861, but was later placed in the genus '' Blepharocalyx''. It was returned to ''Temu'' after a phylogenetic analyses of tribe Mytreae found ''Blepharocalyx'' to be polyphyletic. Description The plant grows to be 15 meters with a trunk diameter of approximately 50 centimeters. The bark is smooth and reddish brown. Leaves are oval-shaped, while the flowers are white and arranged in inflorescences. Fruits are round, dark brown with hints of reddish tone, and taste bitter. ''Luma apiculata'', the Chilean myrtle or ''temu'', is a species of flowering plant in the myrtle family, native to the central Andes between Chile and Argentina, at 33 to 45° south latitude. Growing to tall and wide, it is a vigorous, bushy, evergreen tree with fragrant flowers. Description The Chilean myrtle grows slowly, forming a small tree of around 10 to 15 m, rarely 20 m. Its trunk appears twisted and contorted and has smooth bark, coloured grey to bright orange-brown, which peels as the tree grows - giving a two-tone appearance of rich cinnamon colour, contrasted with cream. It is evergreen, with small, fragrant, oval leaves 2.0 to 2.5 cm long and 1.5 broad, and profuse white flowers in early to midsummer. Mapuche (, Mapuche & Spanish: , or Mapudungun; from ' 'land' and ' 'speak, speech') is an Araucanian language related to Huilliche spoken in south-central Chile and west-central Argentina by the Mapuche people (from ''mapu'' 'land' and ''che'' 'people'). Lucila Godoy Alcayaga (; 7 April 1889 – 10 January 1957), known by her pseudonym Gabriela Mistral (), was a Chilean poet-diplomat, educator and humanist. In 1945 she became the first Latin American author to receive a Nobel Prize in Literature, "for her lyric poetry which, inspired by powerful emotions, has made her name a symbol of the idealistic aspirations of the entire Latin American world".
