Temple David (Perth, Western Australia)
Temple David is a Progressive Jewish congregation and synagogue located in Mount Lawley, an inner northern suburb of Perth. It is the sole progressive congregation in the state of Western Australia. The congregation was established in 1952. History A key proponent for a Jewish congregation under the auspices of Reform Judaism, was Dr Ronald Taft, from the Psychology faculty at the University of Western Australia. Taft had been a member of Temple Beth Israel in Melbourne and took up his faculty position in 1951. In May 1952, a formation known as the "Liberal Jewish Group" was established and began conducting Reform services. Rabbi Herman Sanger, a key figure in the history of Temple Beth Israel, led a service in the same year, addressing 300 in attendance. Taft also became foundation president of the congregation. Great Synagogue (Danzig)
The Great Synagogue (, ), was a synagogue of the Jewish Community of Danzig in the city of Danzig, in what was then the German Empire, later the Free City of Danzig, and is now Gdańsk, Poland. It was built in 1885–1887 on Reitbahnstraße, now Bogusławski Street. It was the largest synagogue in the city, and was demolished by the Free City authorities in May 1939. Design The synagogue was built in the Neo-Renaissance style on the basis of a long rectangle. It was one of the most distinctive buildings in Danzig, with its large dome, two towers and a lantern seen at night. In the middle of a front row there was a large stained glass window with the Star of David, and all spires were topped with meshed Stars of David. Orthodox Judaism is a collective term for the traditionalist branches of contemporary Judaism. Carmel School, Perth
Carmel School is a private Modern Orthodox Jewish school founded in in Perth, Western Australia. It offers Jewish religious and cultural education as well as conventional secular education for students from Kindergarten to Year 12 through a full-time primary school and a high school. It is the only Jewish day school in Western Australia. Notable students include singer Troye Sivan and his brother and musician Tyde Levi. History The Perth Hebrew School, housed by the Perth Hebrew Congregation was the forerunner to Carmel School. In 1957 a Jewish kindergarten was opened with 17 pupils, which led to the creation of Carmel School in 1959. Its first location was adjacent to the Brisbane Street synagogue, before moving to its current location in Yokine in 1962.
