Temco Model 33 Plebe
The Temco Model 33 Plebe was an American two-seat Trainer (aircraft), training aircraft built by Temco Aircraft and evaluated by the United States Navy, only a prototype was built. Design and development Developed from the earlier Temco T-35 Buckaroo, Temco Buckaroo, the Plebe was a single-engined low-wing monoplane with a retractable tricycle landing gear. The Plebe was powered by a Continental O-470-3 piston engine with a two-bladed tractor propeller. The two crew sat in tandem with dual controls under a sliding canopy. First flown in 1953 the Plebe was evaluated by the United States Navy to meet the requirement for a primary/basic trainer. A contract was placed for the competing Beechcraft T-34 Mentor, Beechcraft Mentor and only the prototype Plebe was built. Trainer (aircraft)
A trainer is a class of aircraft designed specifically to facilitate flight training of pilots and aircrews. The use of a dedicated trainer aircraft with additional safety features—such as tandem flight controls, forgiving flight characteristics and a simplified cockpit arrangement—allows pilots-in-training to safely advance their skills in a more forgiving aircraft. Civilian pilots are normally trained in a light aircraft, with two or more seats to allow for a student and instructor. Tandem and side by side The two seating configurations for trainer aircraft are: pilot and instructor side by side, or in tandem, usually with the pilot in front and the instructor behind. The Texas Engineering & Manufacturing Company (TEMCO), also known as Temco Aircraft Corporation, was a U.S.-based manufacturing company located in Dallas, Texas, USA. It is best known for eventually forming part of the conglomerate Ling-Temco-Vought. Company formation Temco was the brainchild of Robert McCulloch, who began his career in aircraft with the Aircraft Division of William Beardmore and Company in Scotland. McCulloch emigrated to the US in 1927 and worked for a small machining company before joining the Atlantic Aircraft Corporation. The company was "flipped" a number of times during the Great Depression, first becoming Fokker Aircraft of America, then General Aviation, and finally North American Aviation (NAA), where McCulloch rose to become Factory Manager in 1941. Temco T-35 Buckaroo
The Temco T-35 Buckaroo (company designation TE-1) was designed in the late 1940s as an extremely low-cost trainer for commercial and military markets. Temco's failure to secure a United States Air Force order for the Buckaroo forced it to turn to non-U.S. governments to keep the production lines going, yet only a few export orders materialized. Design and development Early in 1948, Temco's president, Robert McCulloch, received an inquiry from the Philippine Government expressing an interest in a tandem trainer version of the Swift. The first TE-1A was a modification of the Swift GC-1B, hand-built to rough layout drawings, the major difference in appearance being the tandem seating arrangement which resulted in a narrow windshield and an elongated two-piece canopy with a fixed bubble at the rear. Temco 58
The Temco 58 was a low wing single engine, tandem seat propeller driven trainer designed for sale to overseas air forces. It did not reach production. Design and development Details of the Temco 58 were first released in January 1956. It was a development of the Model 33 Plebe, which had flown the previous year and competed unsuccessfully for a US Naval trainer contract. The Model 58 seems to have used the same airframe (''N848B'') but with increased span and length, and was fitted with a more powerful Lycoming engine in place of the Plebe's Continental O-470. The Model 58 was a private venture aimed at overseas air forces, capable of providing both basic and armaments training. Fully aerobatic and equipped for night flying, it was intended to be economical to buy and maintain. The Beechcraft T-34 Mentor is an American propeller-driven, single-engined, military trainer aircraft derived from the Beechcraft Model 35 Bonanza. The Continental O-470 engine is a family of carbureted and fuel-injected six-cylinder, horizontally opposed, air-cooled aircraft engines that was developed especially for use in light aircraft by Continental Motors.
