Temagami-Lorrain Mine
Temagami-Lorrain Mine is an abandoned surface and underground mine in Northeastern Ontario, Canada. It is located about northeast of the town of Temagami near Sauvé Lake in central Cassels Township. It is named after the Temagami-Lorrain Mining Company, which carried out work on the property in the early 1900s. Development by the Temagami-Lorrain Mining Company consisted of trenching, stripping and sinking of a shaft in fractured Nipissing diabase. The primary commodities mined at Temagami-Lorrain were cobalt and gold. Secondary commodities included arsenic, silver, nickel and copper. In 1925, samples from the waste rock dump showed considerable cobalt bloom and one of the richest had an analysis of 5.87% cobalt, 0.12% nickel, 1.08% copper, 12.48% iron, 14.17% sulfur, 10.39% arsenic, of gold and traces of silver. Temagami, formerly spelled as Timagami, is a municipality in northeastern Ontario, Canada, in the Nipissing District with Lake Temagami at its heart. The Temagami region is known as ''n'Daki Menan'', the homeland of the area's First Nations community, most of whom are Anishinaabe (Ojibwe), living on Bear Island. The official name for this group is the Temagami First Nation. However, a larger group that includes these people, plus non-status residents and some non-residents is called the Teme-Augama Anishnabai. This is a list of mines in Temagami, a municipality in the northern part of Nipissing District in Northeastern Ontario, Canada. Also included are their alias names, coordinates, workings and the commodities that were mined there. The list contains 32 mines, both surface and underground. The Nipissing sills, also called the Nipissing diabase, is a large 2217– to 2210–million year old group of sills in the Superior craton of the Canadian Shield in Ontario, Canada, which intrude the Huronian Supergroup.
